The final regular season game against Brien McMahon High School was especially significant to the Greenwich High School girls basketball team.
The FCIAC matchup held on Feb. 19 at Greenwich High School, marked the Cardinals’ Senior Night and concluded the team’s standout regular season.
Greenwich celebrated its Senior Night in sensational style, defeating Brien McMahon in decisive fashion, 50-33. Prior to the game and following the win, Greenwich held special Senior Night ceremonies, honoring their senior athletes: Kate Baxendale, Lauren Dionis, Alyssa Gath and Ella Morris.

“It was a wonderful celebration of my four outstanding seniors and a great team win,” GHS coach Megan Wax said. “Every single player played with high intensity, speed and aggression as we wanted to set the tone for our postseason play and finish our regular season strong.”
The 17-point victory put the finishing touch on an impressive 19-1 regular season for Greenwich. Seeded second, Greenwich plays seventh-seeded Trumbull in today’s (Feb. 22) FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals at Staples High School. Tip-off is at 12:45 p.m.

Junior guard Madi Utzinger scored a game-high 18 points to power the Cardinals past the Senators. Utzinger scored 12 first half points and made two 3-pointers in the game.
Freshman center Zuri Faison registered 13 points, nine of which came during the second quarter for the Cardinals. Senior captain/forward Kate Baxendale had eight points, including six points in the opening quarter in the winning effort.

Freshman guard Elsa Xhekaj added five points with one 3-pointer, while junior guard/forward Mikayla Kiernan and Morris each made 3-pointers for Greenwich.
Wax spoke of the Cards’ seniors and the impact they’ve had on the program.

“I am so unbelievably proud of my seniors for the growth each of them has had as a player and as a person over the last four years,” Wax noted. “They have been outstanding role models to all of the younger players in the program and I’m heartbroken thinking about a team without them on it next year.”
“Their dedication to this team and to be pushing themselves to be the best they can be on the court and in the classroom is truly admirable.”
