Surging at the exact right time.
That’s exactly what the Brunswick School baseball team is doing as the season is in full swing and the postseason will be here before you know it.
Brunswick earned its fourth straight win against an FAA foe on April 22, downing visiting rival Greens Farms Academy, 6-4, using highly effective pitching and power at the plate.
Right-hander Teddy Bancroft pitched six stellar innings, Maximus Gabelli hit a two-run home run and the Bruins pounded out 11 hits in this significant FAA matchup. With the triumph before their home crowd, the Bruins improved their record to 7-2 in the Fairchester Athletic Association, as they are rounding into form with the postseason rapidly approaching.
Bancroft pitched six innings, allowing three runs on five hits, while registering nine strikeouts and walking just two batters. Tyrus Ostrowski, a right-hander, pitched the seventh inning to pick up the save for the Bruins.

“I’ve been throwing the ball well, I felt good out there,” Bancroft said. “They were swinging a little bit, they’ve got some guys that can hit. But I was executing my pitches, I was throwing my curveball really well and I felt that I was just able to pump it in the zone.”
Indeed, Bancroft’s outing was just what Brunswick needed in the first game of its home-and-home series against GFA.
“Bancroft has been a stud on the mound for us all year,” Brunswick coach Connor Redahan said. “Any time he steps on the mound for us you know it’s going to be a good performance.”
“Bancroft pounded the zone, forced guys to put the ball in play,” Redahan continued. “He had a good outing. They had a few guys that could rally swing it. They were tough outs, we saw some hard hit balls. Those are the guys that you have to attack and Bancroft did a good job.”

Leadoff hitter Jayden Montanez went 2 for 4 with one run scored and one RBI, shortstop Wim Nook was 2 for 4 with one run scored, Ostrowski had one hit, one RBI, one run scored and a stolen base and Gabelli, who started in right field, posted two hits, including a two-run home run.
Gabelli’s homer came in the third inning, a blast that gave the hosts a 4-1 lead.
“It was awesome, it was my first home run on the big field, so it was an exciting one,” Gabelli said of his home run. “It put us more into the lead, so it helped the team, it helped us win, so it was really a great experience.”
“That was our first home run of the season, so that got us fired up,” said Bancroft, who obviously, welcomed the support the lineup gave him.

Catcher Jackson Cunningham had one hit, while designated hitter Giancarlo Cuesta was clutch at the plate as well. Cuesta went 2 for 3 with one run scored and an RBI to also ignite the Bruins’ lineup.
“Giancarlo Cuesta, he had a heck of a game as a freshman,” Bancroft noted. “Everyone hit the ball really well. They had some good pitchers and we were able to hit it and hit some hard balls. It was fun to watch.”
The Bruins made Greens Farms pitchers work hard throughout, working the count in their favor on a number of at-bats, while putting plenty of traffic on the base paths.

“We swung the bats pretty well, but there were innings where we didn’t come away with as much as we would have liked,” Redahan noted. “We threatened every inning we had guys on in just about every inning, which is what you want. I thought we threatened and did a good job on the base paths.”
The Bruins also exhibited impressive defensive play throughout, an area they have improved as the season has progressed – as well as their performances at the plate.
“It was great, we were seeing the ball pretty well,” Montanez said. “Their pitcher was throwing the ball pretty well, but it seemed like we were getting good swings and manufacturing runs early. The defense is looking great.”

Outfielder Landon O’Hara added one hit and a walk for the Bruins, who saw Ostrowski pick up another save. Ostrowski had a strikeout in his one inning of relief, while walking one and allowing one run.
“I just tried to go out there and throw strikes,” Ostrowski said. “It didn’t work right away, but I tried to settle in and I got good defense behind me.”

The Bruins visit Greens Farms Academy today (April 24) at 4:15 p.m.
“We started off a little bit slow, but we’ve definitely come around,” Ostrowski said of the Bruins’ overall play. “We’re a young team, but we’ve grown a lot since the beginning of the year and we’re definitely showing it now.”
