After losing to Ridgefield and Fox Lane, Greenwich High School’s girls lacrosse team knew it had to get back on the winning track, earn victories in the FCIAC and gain momentum for the postseason, which is only three short weeks away.
The Cardinals took positive steps toward doing so, registering convincing victories against FCIAC opponents Fairfield Warde High School and Trumbull High School on April 28 and April 29, respectively. With the impressive wins, Greenwich posted its first two victories in the FCIAC this season and raised its overall record to 5-5.
Against Fairfield Warde at Cardinal Stadium, Greenwich coasted to a 16-6 triumph. Junior Dillon McFerran scored a game-high six goals, while senior captain Aubrey Roth tallied four goals and two assists to ignite Greenwich against visiting Fairfield Warde.

“Today we did a lot better job moving the ball,” Roth said following the Cardinals’ win over Warde on April 28. “We had a lot of assisted goals, which is big for us and the thing we’re trying to work on. I thought that was a really good improvement.”
Junior Sophia DiPietro recorded a hat trick and sophomore Lily Nogaki notched two goals and one assist to also pace the Cardinals, who bolted out to a 12-1 halftime lead on the Mustangs.
“It felt good, I think we really needed that,” GHS first-season coach Makenna Warminsky said after the Cards’ win versus Warde. “Vibes are positive and I think that we were able to play together as a team. It was a good opportunity for us to try new things and to work through in a game situation to work on things that haven’t been as successful for us in the past.”

Sophomore Annabelle DeGennaro had one goal and enabled the Cardinals to gain key possessions, compiling seven draw controls in the winning effort. Twin sisters Sophia and Giselle DiPietro also helped facilitate the offense, with four and three assists, respectively.
Lindsay Messer, a junior, had four draw controls for Greenwich, which excelled on both sides of the field throughout this FCIAC matchup.
“I think we did a good job of moving the ball and I think we did a good job of spacing – running our plays,” McFerran said after GHS topped Warde. “We took our time and were composed. We were able to run through all our plays and our motion.”

The Cardinals entered their home game versus Fairfield Warde intent on beginning to make their mark in the FCIAC and add victories to their record.
“We didn’t have the best results that we wanted the past two games, so we really were looking to come out with a lot of intensity and we were looking to play a full 48 minutes of lacrosse – we were finally able to do that,” Roth said. “Against Ridgefield, that was a tough loss, so we want to use that as a turning point of our season and build on from here.”
Led by senior captains Graycen Aslansan and Flynn Tauber, Greenwich kept Warde’s offense at bay the majority of the matchup.

“Our defense has been super strong this season and I’m glad that it meshed well today,” Warminsky said.
“I think we can continue to learn and take what we did with our plays and use it for our next game,” McFerran said.

McFerran’s words rang true, as GHS traveled to Trumbull on April 29 and was victorious, 16-4. Highlighting the win was Roth, who reached a milestone.
Roth scored her 100th varsity career goals for the Cardinals – an exciting moment for the victors.
Greenwich scrimmages host Greenwich Academy tomorrow (May 1), then is on the road for numerous games, beginning May 6 at Hendrick Hudson High School.
