Cardinals boys tennis team stays undefeated with victories over Darien, Trumbull, Danbury

It was another winning week for the Greenwich High School boys tennis team, which continues to be the top team in the FCIAC.

The Cardinals added three more decisive wins to their record, defeating FCIAC opponents Darien, Trumbull and Danbury this week, while raising their record to a perfect 9-0. The two-time defending FCIAC and Class LL champion Cardinals began their successful week by beating conference foe Trumbull on the road, 7-2.

Greenwich won two of the four singles matches and swept the three doubles matches on its way to topping Trumbull. Junior Elias Orrell won his match at No. 3 singles for GHS, posting a hard-fought 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 win over Trumbull’s Peter Bahr.

At fourth singles, freshman Francesco Lindia was victorious for the Cardinals, sweeping to a 6-0, 6-0 win against his Eagles opponent. Trumbull received wins at first and second singles, both of which were well-contested matches.

Greenwich senior Alex Salib has excelled at the No. 1 singles spot for the undefeated Cardinals.

Senior Justin Ilie recorded a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Greenwich senior Alex Salib at No. 1 singles. In the No. 2 singles match, junior Dean Jackson of the Eagles edged Greenwich senior Manuel Galli Specos in a tight match, 6-0, 7-6 (4).

The Cardinals doubles teams were in top form against the Eagles. Seniors Rohan Mittal and Nick Frumin continued their highly successful season at No. 1 doubles for the Cards, winning in straight sets against Trumbull, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Pierre August and sophomore William Neuenfeldt teamed up for a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at second doubles, while Cardinals teammates Jake Orbanowski, a sophomore and Ryan Stanton, a freshman, were 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 3 doubles.

After defeating Trumbull, Greenwich hosted FCIAC rival Darien on Tuesday (April 29) and cruised to a 6-1 win. Galli Specos (No. 2 singles), sophomore Owen Kwon (No. 3 singles) and Orrell (No. 4) each earned straight set victories for the Cardinals against the Blue Wave.

Manuel Galli Specos has provided standout performances at second singles for the Cardinals’ boys tennis team.

Galli Specos won his match against junior Rithik Melwani, 7-5, 7-5, while Kwon was victorious versus Darien sophomore Henry Johnson, 6-2, 6-0. Orrell was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at fourth singles. In the most competitive singles match, Kai Collins of the Blue Wave pulled out a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (6) win against Salib at the No. 1 spot.

In doubles play, Mittal/Frumin took their match at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2. August/Neuenfeldt (No. 2) were victorious against Darien’s Lucian Middleton and Evan Goodrich, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles matchup saw Orbanowski/Stanton register a 6-1, 6-4 triumph.

The Cards began May with a 7-0 road win against Danbury (May 1). Kwon, Orrell, sophomore Zachary Schwartz and sophomore Amir Fischer were each straight set winners at first-fourth singles, respectively for GHS against Danbury.

Kwon won his No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-4, Orrell swept to a 6-0, 6-0 victory, Schwartz gave Greenwich a 6-0, 6-2 triumph and Fischer was perfect in a 6-0, 6-0 decision. Salib and McFarlane tested their skills as a doubles team in this matchup and were victorious at the top spot, 6-0, 6-0.

Ambastha/Lindia and Obanowski/Stanton each won their matches by scores of 6-0, 6-0, at second and third doubles, respectively. For the season, Greenwich has a record of 9-0. The Cardinals now have a 53-match winning streak, going back to the 2023 season.

Greenwich will look to continue its success streak Monday (May 5) when its hosts Stamford High School at 4 p.m.
