
Greenwich High School’s varsity boys track and field team’ s spring season has featured fantastic finishes in the running events and outstanding efforts in the field events so far this season.
And that’s resulted in plenty of victories for the Cardinals.
Greenwich continued its spectacular season with impressive wins over FCIAC opponents Norwalk and Westhill on May 12 at Cardinal Stadium. For the season, the Cardinals sport a record of 6-1 with one regular season meet against Staples High School remaining.
Following their final regular season meet against the Wreckers in Westport, the Cardinals will compete in the highly competitive FCIAC Championships on May 24, then will test their skills in the CIAC Class LL Championships, which is scheduled to take place on June 2.

In the Cardinals victories versus Norwalk and Westhill on May 12, Daniel Silver, a junior, won the 100-meter run for GHS, registering a time of 11.06 seconds. Teammate Caleb You, a senior, placed second in a season-record time of 11.41 seconds. Kaiser Ilker, also a senior, was fourth for Greenwich, clocking in at 11.58 – a season-record showing.
In the 200-meter run, William Tulloch, a junior, gave Greenwich a first-place finish, crossing the finish line in 22.40 (a personal-record time). Senior Cameron Williams achieved a PR in the 200 run, posting a second place time of 22.64. Jack Hannafin, a junior, finished third with a time of 22.72 (personal-record time) and You took fourth in 23.20.
Junior Daniel Ciccarelli won the 400 race for Greenwich, recording a time of 51.69 seconds, a personal-record showing. Brock Newman of Norwalk, a senior, took second in 53.18 and sophomore Wheeler Carrescia of the Cardinals was third in 53.54 (PR). Noak Frankel, who finished fourth, also had a PR in the race for the Cards (53.83).

“Personally, I think I’ve been doing very well,” Cicarelli said during the Cardinals’ home meet against Norwalk and Westhill. “I have had a PR every meet, I’ve been getting incrementally better every meet, so I think I’m having a good season. In the 400, I wanted to go out hard and finish strong and I feel like I did that.”
Greenwich senior Benjamin Webster took the meet’s top honors in the 800 race, posting a winning time of 2:00.09 (personal-record time). Norwalk senior Tyler Consolati was the runner-up in 2:01.28, followed by Cardinals senior Chase Nizielski, who ran a PR of 2:01.78, good for third place in the race.
Sophomore William Monaco (2:03.71) and senior Oliver Sheppard (2:05.64) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 800 for Greenwich, each running personal-record times.

Banks Valentine from Westhill won the 1600-meter run, finishing the race in 4:50.64. Freshman Rithik Prabhu of the Cardinals placed second in 4:52.72 (PR), while teammates Quentin Koch (freshman, 4:55.21), Aiden Towle (freshman, 4:55.23) and Vihaan Kamath (sophomore, 4:55.26), were third-fifth, respectively, posting personal-record performances.
Cardinals sophomore Owen Costello finished second in the 3200 race (11:12.65), which was won by Valentine from Norwalk (10:13.22). Freshman Mateo Grandjacques of GHS was third with a time of 11:18.10.
The 110-meter hurdles competition saw James Kennedy, a freshman, finish third for the Cards in 18.44 (PR). Emmanuel Then Rojas, a junior, won the race in 16:56. Kennedy then won the 300 hurdles with a PR time of 45.44. Cardinals teammate James McElwain was the runner-up in 48.97.

Noah Frankel, Ciccarelli, Alexander Yu and Carrescia combined for a second place showing in the 4×100 relay (45.74), which was won by Norwalk (44.08). David Boside, August Hutchison, Michael Lai and Nicholas Martschenko were second in the 4×400 (3:51.33). Norwalk won the 4×400 in 3:40.96.
Owen Costello, Matteo Grandjacques, Murphy Bennett and James Mathieson were first for GHS in the 4×800 (13:18.70). In the field events, Martschenko was the triple jump winner for the Cards (39’8, personal-record). David Akinnubi, a senior finished first in the high jump (6’0) and Martschenko was second (5’8). Akinnubi was the runner-up in the triple jump (39’0).
Martschenko also earned a second place finish in the long jump (20’2, PR), which was won by Westhill’s Joshua Villard (20’3.75). Senior Matthew O’Donnell finished third for GHS in the long jump (19’2). Owen Kennedy, a freshman, took second in the javelin for Greenwich (124’7, PR).
“Winning FCIACs is a team goal, I think we have the athletes – the runners, the throwers, we have a really strong team,” Ciccarelli noted.
