Greenwich Country Day School’s boys lacrosse team entered the championship game of the FAA Tournament against rival King School on May 15th with a perfect record through 15 games and needed one more win to put the finishing touch on a memorable season, while accomplishing its ultimate goal.
The talented Tigers took the field and certainly accomplished their mission in resounding fashion.
Seizing control of the title game from the outset, top-seeded Greenwich Country Day School cruised to a convincing 22-6 victory over second-seeded King School in the 2025 FAA Lacrosse Tournament final at GCDS’ Offit field.
Senior captain Griffyn Flood powered the Tigers’ offensive attack, scoring a game-high eight goals, enabling the hosts to enjoy a comfortable lead on the Vikings throughout.

The 2024 season saw King win the FAA Tournament title, defeating Greenwich Country Day in the championship game, so the Tigers indeed, had extra motivation heading into this rivalry matchup.
“It’s awesome, we’ve had this goal for a while,” said Flood, who will continue his lacrosse career at Wesleyan University. “Having 15 seniors, I think it’s the most we’ve had in program history. Every single person had their own contribution to the team. I really think our senior class drove this team to victory. Last year we couldn’t get it done and that also motivated us. Our senior class – I’m super proud of them.”
Bobby Jones, also a senior captain, registered four goals to also pace the Tigers’ offense, which flourished each quarter of this title game.
“Last year was a tough loss to this team, they beat us twice, so to come out here and beat them the first time around – and to take this win this time and finish the season undefeated is incredible,” said Jones, who is headed to MIT, where he will play lacrosse.

Besides finishing its 2025 campaign with a flawless 16-0 record, GCDS also went 9-0 in the FAA. They also won the FAA regular season championship before capturing their second FAA Tournament title in three years.
“It starts at the top with our Head of School, Adam Rohdie, who had the vision to start this high school,” Greenwich Country Day School head lacrosse coach Andy Copelan said of the program’s success. “In our fourth year as a varsity program, to be able to accomplish this with this senior class and this group of kids and these families – it’s remarkable.”
“They put the work in, we knew we had a special group. I’m super proud, this has been an awesome year,” Copelan continued. “We actually lost to King in the championship last year. The interesting thing about the FAA is King last year went undefeated, they had a remarkable year and that’s who everyone was trying to catch. This year, we were able to accomplish the same thing, which is obviously, awesome.”

Holding a four-goal lead, GCDS upped it to five at 6-1, when Flood scored with 9:15 remaining in the second quarter. The Tigers attack/offense led by Flood, Jones, senior Griffin Biase, senior captain Dylan Kellen and freshman Conor Joyce, kept the pressure on the Vikings’ defense and continued building their lead.
Flood’s fourth goal of the game from out yards out put GCDS ahead, 7-1, at the 6:32 mark of the second quarter. Joyce converted a shot with 3:22 to go in the second period, making it 8-1 in favor of the hosts.
Scoring again, this time off an assist from Flood, Joyce’s goal gave GCDS a 9-1 lead going into halftime. Despite leading the Vikings by eight goals after two quarters of action, the Tigers knew they had to remain focused and raise their performance level even higher.

“The guys were all buzzing and moving around the field, it was great,” Jones said. “At the end of the half, we told ourselves that we had to hold ourselves to a higher standard. We weren’t satisfied with how we played even though it was 9-1. The second half we kept going and kept firing.”
Jones’ third goal 52 seconds into the third quarter extended Greenwich Country Day’s lead to 10-1. Flood’s fifth tally with 10:11to go in the third period put the Vikings in an 11-1 hole. Then, just seven seconds later, sophomore Grayson Eisenberg won the ensuing faceoff, sprinted down the field and scored directly off the faceoff, making it 12-1 in favor of GCDS.
Scoring off a pass from Dylan Kellen, senior Griffin Bias’ goal increased the Tigers’ advantage to 13-1 with 8:16 still left in the third quarter. King notched a man-up goal at the 6:30 mark of the third period, then the Tigers went on another run.

Receiving three more goals from Flood and a tally from Jones, the home team moved their lead up to 17-2. William Welch, a senior and Eddie Chandra, also a senior, were among the athletes that added second half goals in the winning effort.
Freshman William Bugbee got the win in goal for the Tigers, whose defense was paced by senior Stephen Carre, junior Eli Thurer and senior Luke Miles.
“It’s championship lacrosse, it’s playoff lacrosse, you feel like you’re going to see the whole gamut of scheme and King kind of threw the kitchen sink at us at times,” Copelan noted. “We’re pretty well balanced between attack and middies and I feel we played good complementary lacrosse between offense and defense. I thought we asserted ourselves well in transition.”

Said Flood: “I’m going to give all the credit to my teammates and coach. We were prepared, we were hungry and motivated.”
Flood has been with the GCDS boys lacrosse program since its inception.
“I played in eighth grade, so I’ve been with the program for five years, so I’m really proud of what this team has accomplished and how quickly it’s grown,” Flood said.

As the season progressed and the win total increased, Greenwich Country Day knew an undefeated, championship season was in its future.
“To build something like that is awesome,” Jones said. “We had some big wins this season against Canterbury, Millbrook, Trinity-Pawling – to see how much better we’ve gotten and how the team has grown is amazing.”
For GCDS Director of Athletics Tim Helstein, it was great to see this team get back to the mountaintop of the FAA.

“I could not be more proud of and excited for this team,” Helstein said. “Coach Copelan, his staff, and the whole squad set out to accomplish a season unlike any other, and let me say, they exceeded all expectations. Kudos to the vision, leadership, and devotion of the seniors on this team, and congratulations to the whole 2025 boys varsity lacrosse team for the success they achieved this spring.”
