Victories against Westhill, Fairfield Warde and Brien McMahon completed a perfect regular season for Greenwich High School’s boys tennis team, which earned a record of 15-0 and won the FCIAC West Division title. Now the Cardinals, who have won 59 consecutive matches dating back to the 2023 season, will of course, look to keep their winning streak going during the all-important postseason.
The FCIAC Tennis Tournament gets underway May 20 and undefeated Greenwich is seeded No. 1 and will host eighth-seeded Ridgefield in the tournament’s quarterfinals at 4 p.m. The Cardinals, coached by Ray Marschall, are the two-time defending FCIAC Tournament champions and have posted a record of 22-0 the past two seasons.
Greenwich capped an undefeated regular season by defeating host Brien McMahon High School, 4-0, in a match that was shortened due to rain. Sophomore Owen Kwon played at No. 1 singles for the Cardinals and defeated his Senators opponent in impressive fashion, 6-1, 6-0. At second singles, freshman Francesco Lindia gave Greenwich a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Senior Ishan Ambastha and sophomore William Neuenfeldt were victorious at No. 1 doubles for the Cardinals, sweeping to a 6-0, 6-0 win. In the No. 2 doubles matchup, sophomore Jake Orbanwoski and freshman Ryan Stanton were also perfect for GHS, winning, 6-0, 6-0.
Against Fairfield Warde at home on May 13, the Cards cruised to a 5-0 triumph. Kwon won at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0 and freshman Milo Russo swept to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 3. Senior Alex Salib won the first set of his match at first singles, 6-1 was ahead, 3-2, in the second set when the match was stopped due to wet courts because of rain. Teammate Adam McFarlane, also a senior, was a 7-5 winner at fourth singles and was even at 1-1 in the second set when his match was stopped.
In doubles action, senior Pierre August and Neuenfeldt teamed up for a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1, while Ambastha and Lindia won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
