For the Greenwich High School varsity boys tennis team, the FCIAC Tournament began the way most of its matches have gone so far this season – with a sweep of its opponent.

Winning all of their matches, the top-seeded Cardinals advanced to the semifinal-round of the FCIAC Tennis Tournament, topping eighth-seeded Ridgefield, 4-0, in the quarterfinals held at Greenwich High on May 20th.

Three of the matches were not completed when Greenwich won its fourth match of the quarterfinal matchup and clinched the match. Up next for Greenwich is the FCIAC Tournament semifinals where it will play host to rival Darien High School on Feb. 23rd at 4 p.m.

Overall, two-time defending FCIAC and CIAC Class LL Tournament champion Greenwich sports a record of 16-4 this spring and is riding an eye-popping 60-match winning streak dating back to the 2023 season.

“It was a great match, we started a little bit slow, but we got into our rhythm, which I was happy about,” August said. “It was a great way to start our FCIAC journey. Hopefully, we can win FCIACs.”

Indeed, August/Neuenfeldt have been a mainstay in doubles competition for the Cards, providing excellent performances each match. They maintained their focus and teamwork throughout their quarterfinal match versus the Tigers.

“Today, it was a good time to practice the things we need to beat the teams we are going to play,” Neuenfeldt noted. “Like avoiding double faults and our first serves and be more aggressive. I think we’re ready and we’re playing pretty well.”
