It was Senior Night for the Greenwich High School varsity girls lacrosse team, which hosted FCIAC rival Wilton recently on its special night and the home squad played an inspired first half, holding a lead against the formidable Warriors.

Yet the second half belonged to Wilton on this May 20th evening.

The Cardinals, who held a halftime lead, proceeded to drop a 14-8 decision to Wilton at Cardinal Stadium. Greenwich then earned the No. 6-seed in the FCIAC Lacrosse Tournament and was defeated in the quarterfinal-round on Friday (May 23rd), 18-4, against a powerful, third-seeded New Canaan squad. Prior to playing Wilton, Greenwich honored its seniors – Graycen Aslansan, Grace Brandes, Rachel Civitillo, Aubrey Roth and Flynn Tauber with a special Senior Night ceremony.

For the game, Aubrey Roth, a senior attack/captain, registered two goals and one assist, junior attack Giselle DiPietro recorded two goals and two assists and junior Sophia DiPietro had two goals and one assist for Greenwich (8-9).

Junior Dillon McFerran also tallied twice for the Cardinals, who had leads of 3-1 and 5-3 on the Warriors in the opening half.

“I think in the beginning of the game we came out with the best attitude and positivity I’ve seen all season,” said Aslansan, a senior defender/captain. “We had an amazing first half on the defensive side, on the offensive side. I think we both did our part, everybody on the team.”

Sophomore midfielder Allison Phelan scored a game-high five goals, while Georgia Polito, a senior attack/captain recorded a hat trick to power Wilton’s offense. The Warriors improved to 12-4 with their win over the Cardinals, then moved it up to 13-4 when they beat Fairfield Ludlowe, 19-1, in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals. Wilton is seeded second in the FCIAC Tournament and plays third-seeded New Canaan in Tuesday’s FCIAC semifinals.

Rose Bilella, a junior midfielder, had five goals and two draw controls, while freshman midfielder Gabby Ray totaled one goal and five draw controls for the victorious Warriors against the Cardinals.

Sophia DiPietro tallied six draw controls for Greenwich, which received nine saves from sophomore Finley DeGennaro on the squad’s Senior Night.

After trailing in the first half, Wilton seized control of this FCIAC matchup in the third quarter, scoring four straight goals to take a 9-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Polito scored a pair of goals during the Warriors’ third quarter run.

“We weren’t able to adapt to the changes they made from the first to the second half,” said Civitillo, a Greenwich senior defender/midfielder/captain. “They could tell that we were able to take their 1-vs.-1s pretty easily and get those first and second slides in and I just think we couldn’t adapt to those changes both on offense and defense.”

Civitillo reflected on her lacrosse career at Greenwich High.

“I have really enjoyed it,” Civitillo said. “I didn’t start playing lacrosse until I was a freshman and I really enjoyed the program here. They really helped me grow.”

Freshman Sadie Sherman and sophomore Liza Fogelson added one goal apiece for Wilton, which scored five times in the fourth quarter.

“I don’t think we played a full 48 minutes of lacrosse, we’ve been struggling with that a lot over the season,” Roth noted. “Coming into playoffs hopefully, we can change that in order for us to be successful.”

Though the Cardinals lost to New Canaan in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals, they still have postseason lacrosse to look forward to. Greenwich is currently ranked sixth in the state in the CIAC Class LL bracket and will qualify for the Class LL Tournament, which begins soon.

The Roth family has enjoyed quite a lacrosse legacy at GHS, with sisters Aubrey, Sophie, Kelsey and Delaney all playing varsity lacrosse for the school.

“My lacrosse experience has been great,” Aubrey said. “I have older sisters, so I’ve been watching them and now that it’s finally Senior Night for me, it’s nice. It’s sad that it’s coming to an end, but it’s been a great experience so far.”

Said Aslansan of the Cards’ mindset going forward: “The goal is to keep the same mentality the whole game and keeping up a positive attitude. We have to carry that the entire game and not lose it in the second half. We came out and had the best energy I’ve seen us have in the first half.”
