Greenwich High School’s varsity lacrosse team’s 2025 season came to an end with an 11-8 road loss to Wilton High School in the quarterfinal-round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament on June 5th, but coach Mackenna Warminsky’s Cardinals put forth a strong effort against the Warriors, while making a stellar showing in the state tournament.
Seeded sixth, the Cardinals advanced to the quarterfinal-round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament by cruising to a convincing 17-5 win over 11th-seeded Stamford in the tourney’s opening round on June 3rd at Cardinal Stadium.
Senior captain/attack Aubrey Roth powered Greenwich’s offense, scoring a game-high six goals in the home victory versus Stamford. During her six-goal effort, Roth reached and eclipsed the 200-career point milestone for her Cardinals varsity career – a fantastic accomplishment for the four-season varsity lacrosse athlete.

“Aubrey has been a great captain all season, a great leader for the underclassmen,” Warminsky said. “She works hard and she leads by example. She is such a good role model for the younger girls.”
Roth dominated against Stamford from the start, scoring the Cardinals’ first five goals, giving the hosts a 5-0 lead. Her five goals were scored during a span of six minutes. Giselle DiPietro added a goal off a free position shot, putting GHS in front of the Black Knights, 6-0, following the first quarter of action.
“I think a lot of my goals were assisted, so credit to my attackers, they did a lot of good feeds,” said Roth, who entered the CIAC Class LL opening-round matchup with 198 career points. “We have a really talented attack and it makes it easier for me.”

Junior Giselle DiPietro registered five goals and three assists in the Cardinals’ triumph against the Black Knights, showing her speed, shiftiness and playmaking ability throughout.
“She came out hard and did well on the draws,” Warminsky said of DiPietro. “She really sets our offense up for success a lot of the time.”
After Stamford closed to within 6-2 by scoring a pair of goals, GHS tallied five straight times to take an 11-2 advantage into halftime. Giselle DiPietro scored twice, while Roth added another goal and junior Lindsay Messer tallied, giving Greenwich a commanding nine-goal halftime lead.

“I think we meshed really well together, our passes were on point, we moved the ball quickly,” said Giselle DiPietro, who also paced Greenwich’s offense this spring. “Our athleticism showed on the field, because we moved the ball so fast.”
Junior Sophia DiPietro scored two goals and gathered two ground balls, Messer scored twice and junior Dillon McFerran had one goal and one assist in the winning effort.
Besides having five goals and three assists, Giselle DiPietro totaled 11 draw controls for the Cardinals in their opening-round state tournament triumph.

Sophomore Georgia Salmon assisted on a goal for Greenwich, which lost to New Canaan in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals.
“We were able to lift our spirits up after our early end in FCIACs,” Warminsky noted. “It was nice to keep going on in the tournament and it’s always nice to play in June. It was a good opportunity for us to try some things and see how it works in the game.”
“I thought we did a good job of playing a full game of lacrosse,” Roth added. “We came out hot and we talked about coming out and setting the bar high and getting some intensity and we were able to do that. It helped us get an early lead, which was good.”

Graycen Aslansan, Rachel Civitillo, Roth and Flynn Tauber were the senior captains that provided valuable leadership and highly productive play the entire season for Greenwich.
Said Tauber of the Cards’ victory versus Stamford: “I think we had the mindset that this could be our last game and the younger players were playing for the seniors. The attack played very well. They put the ball on everyone’s stick perfectly and they finished.”
The win over Stamford moved Greenwich into the tournament’s elite eight – the quarterfinals, where it faced third-seeded host Wilton.

Roth recorded a hat trick with two assists in Greenwich’s 11-8 loss to Wilton. The Warriors will play second-seeded New Canaan in the Class LL semifinals on June 10th at 5:30 p.m. at Fairfield University. Darien, the No. 1-seed plays fourth-seeded Ridgefield in the other Class LL semifinal, also on June 10th at Fairfield University. The Blue Wave and Tigers’ semifinal is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
McFerran had two goals, Giselle DiPietro added one goal and three assists and Sophia DiPietro and sophomore Annabelle DeGennaro scored one goal apiece for the Cardinals versus the Warriors.
The Cardinals finished their 2025 campaign with a record of 9-10 and earned postseason spots in both the FCIAC and Class LL tournaments.
