Brunswick School was represented by two athletes at the 2025 USRowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Fla., recently, both of whom excelled at the highly competitive, prestigious regatta.
George Kapp, who recently concluded his junior year at Brunswick, earned a ninth-place finish, while Bruins teammate Phil Martone, who recently finished his sophomore year, posted a 20th-place finish in a very deep and talented field. Brunswick was the only scholastic program in the country to qualify two single scullers for the National Championships and Kapp emerged as the highest finisher of any single sculler representing Brunswick at the regatta.
On a hot Finals on June 15, at Nathan Benderson Park, Kapp won the “B” Final race in an impressive time of 7:12.61 in tailwind conditions.
Kapp placed sixth in the Time Trial, but then finished last in his semifinal race after flipping his single mid-race, putting him in the “B” Final. Kapp, the 2024 National Champion in the U17 single sculls and member of the 2024 USA U19 Team, used his tremendous fitness to reel in the leader in the second half of the race and ultimately win the “B” Final by over 5 seconds.
Martone finished 17th in the Time Trial narrowly missing the A/B Semifinals by less than one second. In the “C” Final, Martone laid down a personal-best time of 7:33.33 for 20th-place finish overall and the top finish among all sophomores in the country in this prestigious, national event.
Kapp is in Sarasota for the USA U19 Trials in the single sculls this week and also has been invited to the USA U19 Selection Camp in Chula Vista, CA (June 23-July 17) in pursuit of making the National Team for a second year in a row.
