Sacred Heart Greenwich field hockey team starts season with a pair of decisive victories on the road

Sacred Heart Greenwich’s varsity field hockey team began its season with two impressive wins on the road, showcasing their skills, talents and depth in each game.

The defending FAA Tournament champion Tigers earned a 7-0 victory over host School of the Holy Child on Sept. 9, then topped Kent School, 8-0, on Sept. 13. Against FAA foe Holy Child, Whitney Rousseau recorded two goals and three assists, while teammate Lindsay Schwind registered two goals and two assists to lead Sacred Heart in their game against Holy Child.

Schwind opened the scoring, tallying off an assist from Rousseau 1:30 into the first quarter. The same combination struck again for the Tigers, with Schwind scoring off a pass from Rousseau, putting the team on top, 2-0, 7:12 into the first quarter.

Rousseau scored off an assist from Lauren Clark at the 9:25 mark of the opening quarter, giving Sacred Heart a 3-0 advantage. Rousseau made it 4-0 in favor of SHG, with Schwind adding another assist 10:37 into the first quarter. With 1:51 still left in the opening quarter, Elle Corcoran tallied, making it 5-0.

In the second quarter, Kinley Diercksen scored off another Rousseau assist for Sacred Heart’s sixth goal at the 3:27 mark. Caeley Clough sealed the scoring with a goal 3:16 into the fourth quarter for SHG. Liv Starr made one save in goal for the Tigers, who had an 11-0 penalty corners advantage on Holy Child.

“Today we played in our first regular season opener,” said Casey Smith, one Sacred Heart’s captains. “Our energy was strong in warm-ups until the last second of the game. We connected very well offensively. The ball movement was very effective from our defensive line to the forwards. This is a positive start to the season, looking forward to seeing what the rest of the season brings.”

Coached by Alex Gheorghe and Sarah Hill, the Tigers got rolling after a scoreless first quarter on their way to recording a resounding victory against NEPSAC opponent Kent School. Clark scored Sacred Heart’s first goal versus Kent, tallying off an assist from Rousseau. Kingsley Ely had a goal off a pass from Lindsay Schwind or the second goal of the second period, making it 2-0.

With 10:30 to go in the third quarter, Rousseau notched a goal, giving SHG a 3-0 edge. Corcoran assisted on the goal. Hadley Caras scored off a Rousseau feed with 10 seconds left in the third quarter, then Rousseau went on a scoring spree in the final quarter, tallying three times. Caras also added a fourth-quarter goal, with Hollis Koch assisting on her tally.

Starr made one save in the victory for SHG, which is 2-0 on the young season.

“Today we started strong maintaining possession and controlling the ball in Kent’s defensive end,” Sacred Heart junior Xan Collins said. “We really picked up momentum in the second half. Overall, it was a high energy game, to start off the season on a high note.”
