The season-opening game for Greenwich High School’s varsity field hockey team occurred on Sept. 3 and it has already played eight games, including a stretch of four in seven days, so the matchup have come quickly for the Cardinals.

And so have the victories.

Eight games into their season, Greenwich sports a stellar 6-2 record and is riding a four-game winning streak. The Cardinals’ latest win came on Sept. 18 when they hosted FCIAC opponent St. Joseph. Dominating the action throughout, the Cardinals soared to an 8-0 win over the Cadets for their sixth win of the season.

During their four-game success streak, Greenwich has also beaten Cheshire, Fairfield Warde and Brien McMahon. They have outscored their opponents, 28-2, in winning their last four games.

“We started off with eight games, so half of our regular season in three weeks,” Greenwich head coach Megan Wax said. “We’ve been go, go, go since Day 1.”

Greenwich played well in a 1-0 loss to Staples in its season-opener and was defeated by formidable Darien, 4-1. Both matchups were on the road. The 2024 season was one of impressive success for the Cardinals, who finished with a record of 14-6, advanced to the FCIAC Tournament semifinals and the CIAC Class L Tournament quarterfinals. The Cardinals lost to Staples in the FCIAC semifinals and were edged by Ludlowe, 3-2, in overtime in the Class L state playoffs.

Emilia Arroyo, Julia Lattuada, Carlota Lopez and Clara Ojea are the Cardinals’ 2025 senior captains.

“The entire senior class is awesome, these four captains are overall live and breathe our program,” Wax said. “They are leaders on and off the field, they know the sport in and out, they model everything that we want done. They’re an extension of the coaching staff, positive, hard-working and all the things that you want to see in a captain.”

In Greenwich’s convincing 8-0 win over St. Joseph, Ojea and Lattuada scored two goals apiece to help propel the Cardinals’ offense.

“I think we did really good, we’ve been working hard on our passing, our give-and-goes and we really executed that today,” Ojea said of the Cards’ triumph against St. Joseph.

Indeed, the Cardinals have shown plenty of positive characteristics over their first eight games and hope to continue to build upon the momentum they’ve gained over their final eight contests of their 2025 campaign.

Addy Sciulla of Greenwich’s varsity field hockey team (No. 16) moves the ball during a matchup against St. Joseph.

“We have a really strong team and it’s really nice to see how much work we put in over the summer,” said Lopez, a midfielder on the right side. “We started off really strong against Staples and we’ve just continued to grow, so we’re strong.”

Ojea scored the first goal of the Cardinals’ win against St. Joseph, tallying with 13:32 remaining in the opening quarter. Lattuada scored at the 9:45 mark and senior Niene Boezen, a defender, added a goal with 8:21 still left in the opening quarter, making it 3-0 in favor of the Cardinals.

“I think we played really good, last week we had a couple of really challenging games, but we practiced and implemented everything we needed to work on,” said Lattuada a center defensive midfielder. “

Lattuada opened the second quarter scoring, notching a goal at the 12:31 mark, extending Greenwich’s advantage to 4-0. Greenwich enjoyed a three-goal third quarter, with junior Julia Van de Rotte, Reilly Anderson and Ojea registering one goal apiece, putting GHS on top, 7-0.

Junior Delfina Rotella sealed the game’s scoring, tallying with 7:05 left in the fourth quarter. Greenwich had the possession advantage throughout and when St. Joseph had the ball, the Cardinals’ defenders held their offense in check.

“Our strongest points are moving it forward, we do a really good job at give-and-goes in the midfield and then we’re able to pass it up to the forwards, which get it to the back of the net,” Ojea noted.

Over the course of the first half of the season, which has seen the Cards win six of eight games, the scoring output has been divided quite evenly. Ojea, Lattuada, Van de Rotte, Arroyo and Niene Boezen, Anderson, senior Giselle DiPietro and Rotella are among some of the athletes that have ignited Greenwich’s offense.

“We have a lot of contributing pieces, which is what we want,” Wax said of Greenwich’s offense.

Nina Boezen, senior Lily Evers, Alexia Gilroy, a senior and Lattuada are among some of the defense standouts for the Cardinals, who are paced in the midfield by Arroyo and Lopez. Sophomore Tatum Wunderlich has been excellent in goal thus far for the Cards (6-2).

After practically a non-stop game schedule, GHS gets a little break in game action and some practice time. Greenwich hosts Fairfield Ludlowe on Sept. 25 and visits Mamaroneck (N.Y.) High School on Sept. 30.

“We started off really strong against Staples and we’ve just continued to grow, so we’re strong,” Lopez noted.

Playing in the highly competitive FCIAC brings a challenge each game.

“It’s definitely a really good challenge,” Ojea said. “We have really hard teams coming up, like Ludlowe and New Canaan and we’re just working really hard at practice to try to beat them.”

“This team is a really good team, we can definitely get really far in the FCIAC,” Lattuada said. “The goal is to work all together, have patience and work as a unit.”

Greenwich’s senior captains know they have plenty of responsibilities and they welcome their significant roles.

“The captains have worked really hard to creating a unit and I think it’s showing off and paying off so far and it feels really good,” Lopez said.

“It feels really good, I’m glad I can lead the team and lead by example and make sure everyone always stays positive,” Ojea added.

Ludlowe, New Canaan, Wilton and Ridgefield are among some of the formidable foes the Cardinals will soon face.

“There’s a lot of really good teams, so it will be exciting to see how everything pans out,” Wax said. “Our goal is to get better every single game and keep climbing and hopefully, get to a championship position in FCIACs and states.”
