Seven matches, seven victories.
That’s how impressive the Greenwich High School varsity girls volleyball team has been so far this season after experiencing another highly successful season last fall.
The 2024 season saw the Cardinals advance to the championship match of the FCIAC Tournament, where they lost to rival Darien. Greenwich then made it all the way to the semifinal-round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament one season ago and was again edged by Darien. Graduation claimed a strong nucleus of athletes from last season’s outstanding squad, yet as the results have shown, this year’s Cardinals are learning quickly and finding their way in the ultra-competitive FCIAC.
“It’s a new team, but whoever was on my bench last year is in the starting lineup,” Greenwich coach Marianna Linnehan said. “We’re trying to figure out what’s next.”
Greenwich’s seventh win of the season came on Sept. 19 against FCIAC foe Wilton. Showcasing is strong offense and defense, the Cardinals won the match against the Warriors, 25-14, 15-10, 25-14.

“I told them going in to work on the things we needed to work on and just have fun, swing hard and play to win,” Linnehan said after the host Cardinals defeated the Warriors.
Senior Kayah Armstrong recorded 15 kills and three blocks, while junior setter Victoria Sullivan posted 30 assists and 10 digs to help spark the Cardinals (7-0). Junior Heidi Zieme, one of the starters from last season’s squad, tallied 10 kills and 10 digs for Greenwich, which has won by a 3-0 score in six of its first seven matches.
“We started off a little bit rough at the beginning of the season, but we’ve had competitive practices and I think that we’ve capitalized on a lot of our wins,” said Armstrong, a co-captain.
Besides beating Wilton, Greenwich has registered wins against Southington, St. Joseph, Newtown, Joel Barlow and Fairfield Ludlowe.

“Fairfield Ludlowe was a very big win for us, so we’re coming off strong from that,” said Armstrong, who plays on the right side.
Captaining the Cards with Armstrong is senior defensive specialist/outside Aleena Jacobsen.
“We had a lot of great role models on the team last year and we all had a great opportunity to learn from them,” Jacobsen said. “Last year, we played for our seniors, now the whole team is going to rally for us.”
Sophomore Bailee Dayton totaled 16 digs in a fine defensive effort and Klara Tocydlowska, a senior, notched 10 kills for GHS against Wilton.

An ace by Zieme gave the Cardinals a 12-6 lead on the Warriors in the first set and a kill by sophomore Samantha Tommasino made it 15-8 in favor of the home team later in the opening set.
Aleena Jacobsen served an ace, giving GHS a 22-11 advantage and the hosts closed out the first game from there. In the second set, the Cardinals soared to a 21-7 lead, while carrying the momentum throughout.
“Our defense has gotten a lot better from the beginning of the season and our offense – we move the ball around a lot and that definitely helps us,” Armstrong said.

Greenwich’s varsity volleyball program certainly has a winning/championship pedigree. The Cardinals won the FCIAC Tournament championship in 2013, 2017 and 2021. They captured the CIAC Class LL Tournament championship in 2010, 2017 and 2021.
Greenwich usually enters the postseason as a battled tested team after playing in the ultra-competitive FCIAC during the regular season.

“There’s a lot of competition in the FCIAC this year,” Jacobsen said. “I think that we lost a lot of seniors overall in the FCIAC, so a lot of teams are looking really different. There’s no telling who is going to be at the top. We are trying to focus on ourselves, rather than looking way ahead at FCIACs. We are looking at our next game and how can we win that one and the next one after that.”
The Cardinals visited non-conference foe King School, always a powerful team, today (Sept. 22), then has some rival FCIAC opponents coming up on their schedule.

“We still have a long way to go with playing high, high competition,” Linnehan noted. “So, we are trying to keep our minds on track knowing we have really hard games coming up.”
Prior to defeating Wilton, GHS topped St. Joseph, 3-0, in Trumbull on Sept. 18. The Cards won the match, 25-16, 25-17, 25-19.

Armstrong had an outstanding 20 kills and eight digs, while Zieme had 10 kills and 10 digs in the winning effort. Sullivan amassed 40 assists and Dayton had 16 digs.
“I think our big goal is obviously to be FCIAC and state champions, but right now, our team goal is to be able to connect with each other and take one game at a time,” Armstrong said.
Greenwich hosts Bridgeport Central on Thursday, then visits New Canaan on Saturday.
