Only four games remain in the regular season for Greenwich High School’s varsity field hockey team, which looks to be in top form with the postseason rapidly approaching.
The Cardinals sport a sparkling record of 9-3 overall and 7-3 in the FCIAC with their two latest wins coming against FCIAC foe Fairfield Ludlowe High School and non-conference opponent Mamaroneck (N.Y.) High School.
Greenwich, which is in first place in the FCIAC West Division with 14 points (two points are awarded for each victory), defeated Fairfield Ludlowe, 4-2, at Cardinal Stadium on Sept. 25. Following their win against the Falcons, the Cardinals edged Mamaroneck on the road, 4-3.
“Both games were an intense battle where Greenwich demonstrated tenacity, teamwork and resilience,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “We had great, selfless passing and a sense of determination that could not be matched in either game.”
Against Ludlowe, host Greenwich scored four minutes into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but Ludlowe tallied 30 seconds later, evening the score. Greenwich took the lead at 2-1 with a goal five minutes later. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Cards until the hosts generated a goal toward the end of the third quarter, making it 3-1.
In the fourth quarter, Ludlowe scored two minutes in, but Greenwich was able to seal the win with its four and final goal with approximately four minutes remaining. Scoring Greenwich’s goals were senior captain Emilia Arroyo, who tallied twice, senior captain Julia Lattuada and senior captain Clara Ojea.
Against host Mamaroneck, Arroyo scored a goal with about seven minutes to go in the third quarter and senior Giselle DiPietro tallied off an Arroyo assist with approximately two minutes left in the quarter. In the fourth quarter, Mamaroneck scored, but then Ojea scored off a pass from junior Anna Boezen, giving GHS a 3-2 lead.
Mamaroneck scored with about six minutes to go in the fourth quarter to force overtime, knotting the score at 3-3. The Cardinals then scored the game-winner in exciting fashion in overtime, pulling out a 4-3 triumph. Arroyo passed the ball to Lopez, who tipped the ball while diving over the goalie, sending the ball to Ojea, who scored the game-winning goal.
Sophomore goalie Tatum Wunderlich was sensational in goal for Greenwich against Mamaroneck, making 19 saves. The Cardinals traveled to New Canaan today (Oct. 6) to take on FCIAC rival New Canaan. Greenwich played well in a 3-1 loss to New Canaan, which has a record of 8-1-0-2 and is in second place in the FCIAC East Division.
Greenwich hosts Danbury at 4:30 on Oct. 9 at Cardinal Stadium.
