Greenwich Academy’s varsity field hockey team is heading into its annual regular season showdown with its main rival, Sacred Heart Greenwich in top form, having recently earned numerous impressive victories.
Greenwich Academy traveled to Hotchkiss School on Sept. 27 and recorded a well-earned 2-0 win.
“Our kids came ready to battle and played great field hockey,” GA coach Jame Brower said.
The Gators were sparked by one goal apiece by senior midfielder/captain Georgia Schmitz and sophomore midfielder/forward Cordelia Blanc against Hotchkiss. Greenwich Academy then hosted Taft School, the runner-up of the 2024 Class A NEPSAC Tournament on Sept. 29 and was victorious, in decisive fashion, 6-0.
“The team played beautiful hockey,” Brower noted.
Freshman Annie Hanson scored twice, while junior forward Emily Rizzi, senior defender/captain Mallory Walker, junior forward/midfielder Melanie Saunders and senior forward/midfielder Quinn Leahy added one goal apiece in GA’s dominant triumph over Taft.

On Sept. 30th, Greenwich Academy played host to FAA foe St. Luke’s School and once again was victorious. Blanc tallied twice, while Gators teammates Vianna Gabelli, a sophomore and Caroline Donnelly, also a sophomore, had one goal apiece in the winning effort.
“St. Luke’s battled the whole time and showed a lot of potential in the coming years,” Brower said.
GA traveled to Kent and came home with another victory. Freshman defender/midfielder Barrett Hanson, Gabelli, Annie Hanson and Schmitz each scored one goal to lead Greenwich’s Academy’s offense in a win over the host Lions.
Senior Ella Loehnis and junior Niamh Cooney each registered two saves in goal for the victors. A short road trip to Rye Country Day School resulted in a 4-1 triumph for GA on Oct. 7. Blanc (two goals), Annie Hanson (one goal) and Saunders (one goal), paced the offense. GA goalies Loehnis and Cooney combined to make 10 saves in the winning effort.
“RCDS had a talented roster and battled us hard the whole game,” Brower noted. “We came away with a 4-1 victory, but it felt much closer.”

The Gators traveled to Westport for a matchup against FAA opponent Greens Farms Academy and edged the Dragons, 2-1. Rizzi scored both goals to highlight GA’s latest win. GFA is the defending NEPSAC Class C Tournament champion.
Currently, Greenwich Academy has a record of 5-0 in the FAA, while Sacred Heart Greenwich is 4-0. Therefore, the winner of the matchup between GA and SHG on Oct. 15 is for first place in the FAA and a possible No. 1 seed in the FAA Tournament.
