Greenwich High School’s varsity field hockey team has been in top form all season, so it certainly wasn’t a surprise when it celebrated Senior Day in sparkling style when Danbury visited Cardinal Stadium on Oct. 9.
Dominating the action on both ends of the field, the Cardinals received goals from six Sdifferent players, making it a memorable and happy Senior Day at their home stadium.
Senior captain Clara Ojea recorded two goals for Greenwich in its impressive 9-1 win over Danbury in an FCIAC matchup. The win raised Greenwich’s record to a stellar 10-3 on the season. The Cardinals then traveled to FCIAC rival Wilton on Oct. 13 and played extremely well in being edged by the Warriors in overtime, 1-0.
Currently, Greenwich is 10-3-0-1 overall and 8-3-0-1 in the FCIAC, good for 17 points. The Cardinals are in first place in the FCIAC West Division and should receive a solid seed in the rapidly approaching FCIAC Field Hockey Tournament.

“We have a lot of talent, we have a lot of drive, we have a lot of determination and a team that’s full of players who are willing to work super hard to achieve a goal,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “Every day they view it as a gift and they are working hard to hopefully, get a good place in the FCIAC Tournament and state tournament. The league is super strong this year and it’s going to be interesting how it all shakes out.”
Against the Hatters, the Cardinals held a 3-0 lead following the first quarter and entered halftime with a 5-0 advantage.
“The team is playing great,” Wax said. “We were extremely selfless with the ball. I thought we had great passing and we were able to get everybody involved and as a coach, that’s all you ever want from your players is that they want the entire team to succeed and we utilize everyone on the field to be successful and that’s what we did.”
Ojea opened the scoring, giving the Cards a 1-0 lead on the Hatters with 7:48 remaining in the first quarter.

“Our positioning for the playoffs is really good,” said Ojea, who has helped propel Greenwich’s offense throughout the season. “I think we’ve improved a lot this year.”
Senior Reece Rabinowitz scored at the 5:33 mark of the first quarter, making it 2-0 in favor of GHS. Still in the first quarter, the Cardinals added on to their lead, courtesy of senior Giselle DiPietro. DiPietro tallied with 4:44 to go in the opening period, putting GHS on top, 3-0. Julia DeLuca, a senior, began Greenwich’s second-quarter scoring with 7:03 left for a 4-0 lead.
“I think we’re working really well as a team our goal is to pass to each other very well,” said Greenwich senior captain Carlota Lopez, also one of the Cardinals seniors honored on Senior Day. “Our communication and unity has improved a lot, so it’s where we see ourselves on the field right now. It was a super fun game, it was senior day today and it was super fun.”

Senior Julia DeLuca got the offense going in the second quarter, tallying at the 7:03 mark, giving Greenwich a 4-0 edge. Less than five minutes later, Lopez notched a goal, making it 5-0 with 2:13 to go in the second period.
“I think today was a super fun game,” Greenwich senior captain Julia Lattuada said following Greenwich’s Senior Day triumph. “We gave all the seniors an opportunity to play and it was super fun. It’s been super fun and it’s sad it has to come to an end, but it’s been fun.”

DeLuca, who like Ojea tallied twice, added a third-period goal at the 12:53 mark. Rabinowitz, also a Senior Day, two-goal scorer, tallied with 4:05 to go in the third quarter. Ojea’s second goal came early in the fourth quarter.
Josefina Balaguer, also a senior, concluded Greenwich’s scoring late in the fourth quarter. Greenwich drew 10 penalty corners and registered 18 shots on goal for the game.
“I’m really proud of the team and really proud of everyone,” GHS senior captain Emilia Arroyo said.

Greenwich hosts Ridgefield on Oct. 16 at 4 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium, then plays host to Westhill on Oct. 17, also at 4 p.m.
