Greenwich High School’s varsity boys soccer team has traditionally been one of the premier programs in the FCIAC and state for the past two decades, with squads that have won FCIAC titles and even a state championship.
Yet Greenwich’s 2025 team will be remembered as being one that’s accomplished something no other squad has achieved in school history.
Cruising to a 5-1 Senior Night victory over Brien McMahon at Cardinal Stadium on Oct. 17th, Greenwich put the finishing touch on an incredible, undefeated regular season, a season in which it earned an outstanding record of 15-0.
The win over the Senators marked the Cardinals first undefeated regular season and gave them even more momentum going into the postseason. Coached by Kurt Putnam, No. 1-seeded Greenwich hosted No. 8-seeded Fairfield Warde in today’s (Monday’s) FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals and was victorious, 1-0.

In Greenwich’s decisive Senior Night win against Brien McMahon, senior captain Francisco Luzuriaga registered one goal and four assists, while senior forward Alexander Amato scored twice to power the offense. The Cardinals have allowed only 11 goals in 15 games so far this season, while exhibiting standout defensive play.
“It’s been a privilege to play on the team,” said Luzuriaga, a dynamic playmaker who has played at the forward and midfield positions for the Cardinals. “I have countless memories, I’ve made many friends. I’ve had great coaches, so it’s been a privilege. No team in Greenwich history has actually finished 15-0. We are proud of ourselves.”
The defending FCIAC Tournament champion Cardinals, who captured the conference title in 2024 by defeating Stamford in the final, are also ranked No. 1 the CIAC Class LL state rankings, along with being the No. 1 seed in the FCIAC tourney.

After enjoying a historic, regular season to remember and relish, the Cardinals know they must continue to compete at a high level during the postseason tournaments. Greenwich’s recent FCIAC Tournament championships came in 2024, 2017, 2016, 2013 and 2007. The Cardinals captured the CIAC Class LL state tournament championship in 2022.
“We also know our record gets erased now when it gets to head-to-head games – all or nothing,” Luzuriaga noted. “So, we know we have to keep our momentum.”
Amato shared the same sentiment regarding the postseason tournaments.

“History for the school, it’s unbelievable,” Amato said. “I’m proud of each one of these boys. I know that every single team in the FCIAC is going to come and want to beat us. We have a target on our back for sure.”
In Greenwich’s Senior Night triumph against McMahon, senior Nick Imbrogno started the scoring, tallying off a corner kick in the 19th minute, with the assist going to Luzuriaga.
Amato gave the Cards a 2-0 advantage, scoring off a Luzuriaga assist in the 33rd minute. The 39th minute saw the same combination tally against the Senators, with Luzuriaga again setting Amato up for a goal. Greenwich entered halftime with a 3-0 lead on McMahon.

“I’ve struggled for about two games, not with the attack part, but with the final finishing piece and I’ve been working a lot on it in practice,” Amato said of his efforts on offense. “It really all came together, as soon as I saw myself, I knew what to do, I remembered what coach told me and I just took a breath and finished it.”
Two minutes into the second half, Luzuriaga converted a shot with Amato assisting on the goal this time, putting GHS in front, 4-0. Senior Patrick Kennedy scored a Senior Night goal, concluding the Cardinals’ scoring late in the second half.
James Buck, a senior, earned another victory in goal for Greenwich, which was paced defensively by senior captain Henry Davis, senior Nick Martschenko and Jason O’Brien, also a senior.

“This whole season, game after game, there’s been consistency and 100 percent effort from everyone,” Davis said of the Cards’ success. “It shows what this team can do. Going undefeated is an amazing part of this school’s history and FCIAC history. So, I’m ecstatic. Obviously, there’s still a lot of work to do.”
“You can see how the team’s been learning how to play together and the chemistry we’ve built,” Luzuriaga said.
