It was another winning week for Sacred Heart Greenwich’s varsity field hockey team, which continued its highly successful season.

The Tigers traveled to Westminster on Oct. 22nd and cruised to a 6-0 victory, after rolling to a 9-1 road win over Greens Farms Academy on Oct. 20th. The victories put the Tigers back on the winning track after they lost two tough, one-goal games.

Against host Westminster, Whitney Rousseau gave SHG a 1-0 lead when she scored off an assist from Hadley Caras with 8:26 remaining in the first quarter. Joanna Eken made it 2-0 in favor of Sacred Heart, scoring off a Rousseau assist at the 11:03 mark of the second quarter.

In the third quarter, Whitney Rousseau scored two more goals to open a 5-0 lead on Westminster. She scored with 10:53 to go in the quarter, then at the 6:456 mark. Caeley Clough sealed Sacred Heart’s scoring with a goal off an assist from Xan Collins. Controlling the ball throughout, SHG held a commanding 20-1 penalty corners advantage on Westminster.

“In our game today we played focused and strong until the last minute,” Sacred Heart senior co-captain Casey Smith said. “Throughout the week we worked on staying connected as one team, which showed at both games this week. Our passing was precise and our communication was high. With two regular season games left, we have to continue to practice at a game length pace and keep working hard.”

Sacred Heart’s offense was on point from the opening quarter in its home triumph against Greens Farms Academy on Oct. 20. Elle Corcoran scored off an assist from Lindsay Schwind with 12:38 left in the first quarter. Greens Farms tied the score at 1-1 on a goal from Ryan Farnum with 10:56 to go in the opening quarter. Schwind and Corcoran added one more goal apiece in the opening period, putting the Tigers on top for good at 3-1.

Ely tallied off a pass from Rousseau at the 10:37 mark of the second quarter, then Elizabeth Devine notched a goal off an assist from Hollis Koch, making it 5-1, with 5:38 remaining in the quarter. Schwind and Koch generated third period goals, with the assists going to Rousseau and Devine. Corcoran and Devine posted third quarter goals to cap the Tigers’ great offensive showing.

Liv Starr made three saves in goal in the winning effort.

“Great win for the team,” SHG coach Alex Gheorghe said. “A fantastic rebound from our previous tough game.”

Said Sacred Heart coach Sarah Hill: The forwards did a good job converting on their own. We are very happy overall with the outcome.”
