Greenwich High School’s varsity girls basketball team recently opened its 2025-2026 season with two road games and produced strong performances in each matchup.
The Cardinals began the new season with a game against CIAC Class LL defending state champion Sacred Heart Academy and played well in a 56-40 loss. Greenwich responded from the defeat by earning a decisive 65-31 win on the road against Masuk High School.
In Greenwich’s loss against Sacred Heart Academy on Dec. 16th, senior forward/guard Madi Utzinger scored 14 points, including one 3-pointer to pace the Cardinals.

Sophomore center Zuri Faison scored 11 points with one 3-pointer, while sophomore guard Elsa Xhekaj added six points and also made a 3-point shot for the Cardinals. Senior forward Mikayla Kiernan had five points, while senior Maddie Young totaled three points for Greenwich, which is coming off a 2024-25 season in which it advanced all the way to the semifinal-round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament.
In Greenwich’s 65-31 triumph at Masuk, Madi Utzinger poured in a game-high 31 points to power the Cardinals (1-1).
Up next for Greenwich is a home game against non-conference opponent at Bethel High School at 3 p.m. The Cardinals’ home-opener is scheduled to take place on Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
