Sacred Heart Greenwich and Greenwich Academy’s varsity swimming/diving teams were in action in an FAA meet that included School of the Holy Child at Brunswick School’s Natatorium on Feb. 4th and the Tigers swept the meet, defeating both GA and Holy Child.
Winning six events, while posting a number of top three finishes, Sacred Heart edged neighborhood rival Greenwich Academy, 54-48 and was victorious against Holy Child, 75-26. Greenwich Academy posted a 79-22 win over Holy Child.
The meet began with Greenwich Academy’s quartet of Meryl Kennedy, Sophia Bens, Samantha Packard and Eva Orscher winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:55.17. Laurel Cary, Allison Santaniello, Caroline Santaniello and Spenser Simmons placed second for Sacred Heart in 1:59.10. GA finished third in the race (2:06.77).
Molly Cosgrove gave Sacred Heart a winning effort in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 2:01.96. Tigers teammate Caitlin Dean finished second in 2:08.95 and Tresure Hudson of GA took third (2:11.18). Irene Robredo of the Gators was fourth (2:15.19). In the 200-yard individual medley, Sophia Bens earned first-place honors for GA, clocking in at 2:20.63. Caroline Santaniello placed second for SHG (2:21.63), and Meryl Kennedy (GA) was third in 2:27.59.
Eva Orscher of GA won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds. Finishing second was Laurel Cary of the Tigers (26.76). GA’s Treasure Hudson finished third (27.07), Spenser Simmons had a fourth-place finish for SHG (28.22) and Aine Doyl of Holy Child placed fifth (29.80).
On the 1-meter diving board at Brunswick’s pool, Sacred Heart received a winning performance from Emma Beaty, who totaled 232.95 points over six rounds. Greenwich Academy’s Ellie Jarvis was the runner-up (217.95 points) and Mary Kate McBreen placed third for SHG (174.83).
Samantha Packard registered a first-place finish for the Gators in the 100-yard butterfly race, posting a time of 1:03.14. Allison Santaniello (Sacred Heart) took second in 1:04.82 and Claire McCormick of GA was third (1:09.71).
Sophia Bens was the 100-yard freestyle winner, recording a time of 56.79 seconds for the Gators. Caroline Santaniello was second (57.22) and SHG teammate Caitlin Dean placed third (59.68). Samantha Packard showed her stamina in winning the 500 freestyle for Greenwich Academy. Packard swam a time of 5:21.41. Sacred Heart’s Molly Cosgrove had a second-place finish (5:34.73) and Analise Braddock of Holy Child was third (5:45.55).
Also in the 500 freestyle, Irene Robredo of Greenwich Academy finished fourth (5:55.20). Sacred Heart Greenwich’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Allison Santaniello, Mary Kate McBreen, Caitlin Dean and Molly Cosgrove combined for a winning time of 1:46.94, giving their squad important points in the team standings. Sacred Heart’s Hampton Solis, Madelyn Davidoff, Olivia Linehan and Spenser Simmons were second for the Tigers (1:55.17). Greenwich Academy took third in the 200 freestyle relay 1:55.27).
In the 100-yard backstroke, Laurel Cary earned the meet’s top honors, placing first in 1:03.36. Eva Orscher was right behind her in second with a time of 1:03.56 for GA. Maddie Henderson (Holy Child, 1:09.02) placed third, followed by Sofia Castellanos (GA, 1:09.92). The 100-yard breaststroke saw Allison Santaniello register a winning time of 1:12.02 for SHG. Meryl Kennedy (GA, 1:15.24) was the runner-up, while teammate Katherine McMahon was third (1:15.71).
The impressive meet ended with Sacred Heart’s Caitlin Dean, Caroline Santaniello, Laurel Cary and Molly Cosgrove combining to finish first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:55.61). Treasure Hudson, Claire McCormick, Eleanor Del Boccio and Meryl Kennedy were second in the race for GA (4:08.00).
