Brunswick School’s varsity wrestling team made another strong showing at the recent 2026 WNEPSWA Championships at Avon Old Farms School, placing third at the ultra-competitive tournament.
Bruins senior co-captain Jack Degl defended his title in the 165-pound weight class. Seeded first, Degl, the No. 1 seed, defeated Blake Watkins of Greens Farms Academy by technical fall in 5:39. Degl held a 21-6 lead on Watkins when he was awarded the championship match by technical fall.
For the second year in a row Degl was awarded the Ray Sparks Trophy, which has been presented each year since 1958 “to the tournament’s outstanding wrestler as voted by the coaches.” Degl is the fifth Brunswick wrestler to ever receive this award (1987 Jamie Butler, 1997 Justin Weinstein, 2007 Chasen Van Lang, 2016 Jon Errico) and the only Bruin ever to be a two-time winner of this award.
All thirteen Brunswick wrestlers placed top five at their respective weight classes at the WNEPSWA Championships, which included nine teams. Carlo Tucci (157-pound weight class), Marco Sethi (175-pound weight class), Nikki Krause (190) and Michael Marini (280) each finished in second place in their respective weight class brackets at the WNEPSWA Championships for the Bruins.
Additionally, Owen Bartoszek (144-pound weight class), Travis Wilson (175-pound class) and Jake Greene (215-pound weight class) each wrestled back to win their consolation brackets and take third place for Brunswick. Brunswick’s the freshmen lightweight trio of Seann Dubrovsky, Paul Kesmodal, and Jack Thaler each earned fourth-place at the tourney. Mike Liguori and Quinn McGraw both took fifth place in their respective brackets.
Seniors Degl, Marini, and McGraw go out as four-time WNEPSWA placewinners, while Bartoszek, Sethi, and Krause join teammate Alec Harned as three-time placewinners at the WNEPSWA Championships. Greens Farms Academy won the team title at the WNEPSWA Championships, amassing 287 team points. Host Avon Old Farms School was second (190.5 points) and Brunswick was third with a team score of 178 points. Hopkins School and Greenwich Country Day School (95 points) rounded out the top-five teams at the tournament.
For Greenwich Country Day School, Grayson Ross placed second in the 120-pound division at the WNEPSWA Championships. Toby Dubner was third in the 138-pound weight class for GCDS, while Leo Zhao took fourth in the 215-pound division.
