Greenwich High School’s varsity boys basketball team scored the first five points of its game against Ridgefield on Feb. 11th, but the visiting Tigers seized full control of this FCIAC matchup thereafter.
The Tigers opened a 10-point lead on the Cardinals after the first quarter of play, held a 23-point advantage at halftime and never looked back.
Senior guard/forward Jacob Hankla scored a game-high 28 points to power Ridgefield to a highly impressive 80-37 win over Greenwich in a late-season FCIAC game. The Tigers sport a strong 13-4 overall record and are 10-2 in the FCIAC.
Greenwich received a team-best 24 points from senior guard Sandro Scott. The Cardinals rebounded from their loss to the Tigers by defeating Norwalk at home on Feb. 14, 61-41. For the season, Greenwich has a record of 6-8 and is 5-7 against its FCIAC opponents. Currently, GHS is in a three-way tie for ninth place in the FCIAC. The top eight teams qualify for the FCIAC Tournament.

Against Ridgefield, the Cardinals took a 5-0 lead on a foul shot by Scott, a basket off an offensive rebound by senior center Michael Golden and a layup from junior forward Oliver Frisoli. It was all Ridgefield after that.
The Tigers went on a 19-4 run to take a 19-9 lead going into the second quarter. Hankla’s layup gave Ridgefield a 9-7 lead and a jump hook by senior center Patrick Foley made it 11-7 in favor of the visitors.
Hankla hit a short jump shot, converted a layup off a steal, drove to the basket for a layup and scored on a baseline drive, putting the Tigers on top, 19-7. The first quarter saw Hankla saw 12 points, before totaling 21 points in the opening half.

Throughout the game, Ridgefield excelled at moving without the ball against Greenwich’s man-to-man defense. Their offense, which featured a lot of movement, created opening perimeter shots, some from 3-point range and opportunities to drive to the basket for layups.
Back-to-back baskets by Hankla gave Ridgefield a comfortable 23-9 lead to start the second quarter, prompting a GHS timeout. A free throw by senior center Michael Golden stopped the Tigers’ run, but the visitors scored the next five points, making it a 28-10 game.
Foley scored 13 points and was a force in the low post for Ridgefield, which received 10 points, including a 3-pointer from junior guard L.J. Specht and eight points from senior guard Jack Withstanley, who converted two shots from beyond the arc.

Coached by Andrew McClellan, the Tigers got points from nine players for the game and were ahead, 62-25, following the third quarter. Ridgefield ranks second in the FCIAC standings with a record of 10-2. Staples is in first place at 12-0.
Golden, who battled hard in the low post for rebounds throughout the game, had seven points for the Cardinals, who visit Westhill on Feb. 17th, then travel to Fairfield Warde on Feb. 20. Coached by Alexander Sirena, Greenwich closes out its regular season on Feb. 23 with a home game versus Brien McMahon.

With three games remaining in their regular season, the Cardinals are ranked 13th in Division I of the CIAC.
