Despite dropping a tough one-goal decision on Senior Night against Guilford, Greenwich High School’s varsity girls ice hockey team has certainly made its mark this season, becoming a squad that’s pushed most of its opponents to the absolute limit.
The Cardinals have earned nine victories so far this season, sport an overall record of 9-8-1 and have qualified for the FCIAC Tournament, which they missed out on the previous two seasons. They’ve also been involved in numerous close games, as they have been involved in 10 games that were decided by one or two goals.
Greenwich put forth an impressive performance on its Senior Night on Feb. 12th, skating to a 3-2 loss to a strong Guilford High School squad at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink.
“The team battled, all we can ask for is that they come out and compete,” Cardinals first-season coach Mike Lisjak said of his squad. “They certainly showed they can compete.”

Freshman Maddy Weiner, a defender, scored a goal and sophomore forward Miren Woolven also registered a goal for Greenwich. The first period concluded in a 1-1 tie. Guilford held a 2-1 edge after two periods of action and the Cards tied the score at 2-2 just past the midway point of the second period.
Visiting Guilford scored the game-winning goal with 6:07 remaining in the second period.
“Their goalie (Avery Torres) played pretty amazing, we had a lot of shots on goal, hit the post three times,” coach Lisjak noted. “The girls played hard, battled hard, they kept their heads high.”

Guilford scored the matchup’s first goal with 8:19 remaining in the first period. Forward Natasha Binkowski scored off an assist from Maggie Apicella, making it 1-0 in favor of Guilford. Greenwich responded, knotting the score at 1-1 with 1:59 to go in the opening period.
With the Cardinals on a power play, Weiner gathered the puck, skated all alone down the left wing and snapped the puck past Torres, evening the score. The Cards skated hard throughout the game and were quick to the puck in Guilford’s zone.
Defensively, senior captain Carlyn Duffy, sophomore Natalie Allen, freshman Sasha Miranowski, sophomore Hailey Dreher, Weiner and sophomore Emily Kohloff were among the athletes that helped keep Guilford’s high-octane offense in check.

“They are a really good team, we’re certainly a lot better from where when we played them in the beginning of the year,” said coach Lisjak, whose Cardinals were defeated by Guilford on Dec. 16, 4-1. “It was a physical matchup, the refs let us play, which is good. Sometimes you get the breaks and sometimes you don’t and today just wasn’t our day.”
Cardinals sophomore goalie Eleanor Woolven kept the score 1-1 with several nifty saves toward the end of the first period. In the second period, Binkowski scored her second goal of the night, putting the visitors on top, 2-1, with 2:55 to go in the frame.
The Cardinals threatened to knot the score in the second stanza, but luck wasn’t on their side. They generated plenty of shots on goal that Torres turned away and also hit the post several times.

The score was tied again when sophomore forward Miren Woolven snapped a shot home from the left faceoff dot, making it 2-2 with 7:26 left in the third period. Guilford, however, quickly responded, scoring the game-winner just over one minute later.
Binkowski completed her hat trick, tallying off assists from Apicella and Claire Rodgers, giving Guilford a 3-2 advantage. Greenwich continued to apply pressure in Guilford’s zone in the waning minutes, but the third goal eluded the hosts.
Greenwich paid tribute to its two seniors on Senior Night, which featured a pre and postgame ceremony before and after the game. Forwards Tate Patterson and Allie Studwell are the Cardinals’ two seniors.

“It is great celebrating for them,” coach Lisjak said of his seniors. “It was nice seeing them start, they had a good first shift, they almost got them there right off the bat.”
They Cardinals have lost three consecutive games, one of which was a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to Wilton. Prior to that, Greenwich had won five straight games, stringing together victories against Simsbury (twice), Ridgefield, West Haven and Fairfield Ludlowe.
Greenwich is currently in fourth place in the FCIAC and looks as though it will get the No. 4 seed in the FCIAC Tournament, which begins at the end of the month.
