Ending the regular season in style.
That’s exactly what the Greenwich High School varsity boys ice hockey team has done and as a result, it’s primed and poised to make a deep postseason run.
The Cardinals finished their 2025-2026 regular season with three consecutive victories, defeating FCIAC opponents Stamford/Westhill and Ridgefield, then topping non-conference/state foe, North Haven. Greenwich came from behind to beat the combined Stamford/Westhill team, 5-3, on Feb. 14th, a game in which the Cardinals celebrated Senior Night. The Cardinals were then victorious on Feb. 16th at home versus Ridgefield, 3-1, before upending North Haven on the road on Feb. 18, 7-4.
For the regular season, Greenwich finished with a record of 9-11 overall and 3-5 in the FCIAC. Up next for Greenwich is the FCIAC Hockey Tournament, which begins on Feb. 25th against an opponent yet to be determined. The Cards have also qualified for the CIAC Division I state tournament. In Greenwich’s spirited comeback 5-3 Senior Night win over Stamford/Westhill before a big, enthusiastic crowd at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink, junior forward John Meehan, one of the squad’s leading goal scorers, registered two goals to ignite the offense.

The triumph saw Greenwich come back from a 3-1 second period deficit against a formidable Stamford/Westhill squad determined to put a damper on the hosts’ Senior Night.
“We needed this win coming into our playoff stretch,” Greenwich first-season coach Neal Rich said. “Stamford is always a tough team. We were down and pulled it off. Some of our seniors stepped up big and got a couple of goals. We bonded together as a team and came out on top.”
Stamford-Westhill seized a 3-1 lead when forward Christopher Berlingo snuck a shot inside the right post from close in with 6:21 remaining in the second period. Teammate Christoper Gomez assisted on Berlingo’s goal, which put the visitors two goals in front. Shortly after, Greenwich began its comeback.

The Cardinals closed to within 3-2 at the 5:40 mark of the second period. Junior Thomas Lanzarone tallied off a one-timer with sophomore Aidan Murray and senior William Flatow each assisting on the goal, cutting Stamford/Westhill’s edge to 3-2.
After Meehan nearly scored just before the buzzer ending the second period, the Cardinals scored on their first shift of the third period. Senior Hayden Odefelt scored off a pass from junior Troy Murray, tying the score at 3-3 for Greenwich 29 seconds into the third period.
Meehan put GHS on top for good at the 9:19 mark of the third period, as his goal gave the home team a 4-3 advantage, prompting a Stamford-Westhill timeout.

“He’s our leading scorer this year, he’s just got a knack for the back of the net,” Rich said of Meehan’s prowess. “It’s hard to stop a kid when he’s moving that fast and he’s got a shot like he does.”
Meehan tallied on a tap-in with 2:51 to go in the final period, sealing Greenwich’s come-from-behind win, making it a happy Senior Night.
“Getting that lead was pretty big, that goal got us going,” Meehan said of his first goal. “The second goal kind of the ice breaker it was good to get that second goal to give us a bigger lead and play with some more confidence. I love all the seniors on the team, it’s great to get them the win tonight.”

Said Rich of the Cardinals’ impressive comeback: “It was about bunkering down and playing hard Greenwich hockey, which is hard-nosed hockey. Getting pucks deep and going to work down in the corners and bang some pucks in the back of the net.”
“The message to the team was stop stick handling and start shooting and it worked out,” Rich continued. “We blocked a few shots and got pucks over the line. We got them deep or got them on net.”
Senior Jason Rosenthal started in goal for the Cardinals and junior Will Salib took over in net during the second period in the winning effort. Greenwich captains Trent O’Neil, Teddy Johnson and Boden Farmer are among the seniors, which include Rosenthal, Flatow, Odefelt, Bruce Spelman and Alex Zhukovsky.

“I know we’ve had our ups and downs, but it’s playoff season, so we’re digging hard and playing our game,” O’Neil said. “I know we’re one of the best teams in the FCIACs and states. I think this is the greatest group of guys we’ve had in the past four years. Our forwards are really good, our defense is really strong and we have a really good goaltender.”
O’Neil has been sidelined most of the season with a Grade 4 kidney laceration he suffered about four games into the season about four games in. He said he’s about a month into recovery can do almost everything except take contact.
“It’s all about letting the guys know that I’m there with them even though I’m not on the ice,” O’Neil noted. “Just figuring out points where they need help on. Kind of motivating them and leading them.”

Farmer is also nursing an injury. He’s been out the whole season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament, while playing lacrosse this past summer. Farmer intends to be back with the varsity lacrosse team this spring and hopes to return to the hockey team at some point during the postseason.
“‘I’ve been practicing with the team every practice,” Farmer said. “I’m just trying to be a leader during practice, trying to get people going. You always have to stay positive and bring energy to the team.”
As for the Cardinals’ Senior Night comeback victory?

“I’m so proud,” Farmer said. “Just seeing our team rather together and have a great win was amazing to see, it felt so great.”
