Needing 17 points to reach the 1,000-career point milestone, Greenwich High School senior guard Sandro Scott scored the points he needed and more in the first half of the Cardinals’ Senior Night game against Brien McMahon to earn the impressive achievement.
Scott scored 23 first-half points and totaled a game-high 36 points overall in powering host Greenwich to a 65-58 win over FCIAC foe Brien McMahon. The talented Scott scored his 1000th career point during his 13-point second quarter.
After Scott reached his 1000th career point, the game was stopped and was congratulated by his coaches, teammates and Greenwich High School Athletic Director Peter Georgiou, who presented him with the game ball.

“It feels amazing,” Scott said. “I’ve worked really hard since sophomore year and I really hoped it played out. We got cut short three games this season and I was stressing, I didn’t think I’d get 1,000 but I just trusted. I want to thank my teammates, because they look for me and trusted me and I want to thank God too.”
Following his 23-point first half, Scott added 13 more points in the second half. He now has 1,019 career points.
“Sandro has worked hard, diligently for three years on varsity,” Cardinals coach Alexander Sirena said. “I’ve never met another player more deserving of 1,000 points. McMahon knew that he needed the amount he needed tonight coming into this game. They were doubling all game and he still couldn’t be stopped.”

With the win, Greenwich finished its regular season with an overall record of 7-10 and an FCIAC mark of 6-9. The Cardinals did not qualify for the eight-team FCIAC Tournament but have earned a berth in the CIAC Division I Tournament.
The Cardinals are ranked No. 13 in Division I and will play No. 4 Northwest Catholic in the opening round of the Division I Tournament.
“We’re playing Northwest Catholic in states, they’re a pretty good team, so it’s going to be a tough one,” Scott said. “We’re going to fight and if we play like we played tonight, hopefully, we’ll keep it close.”

In the Senior Night victory versus Brien McMahon, senior center Mike Golden scored nine points, all of which came in the second half for the Cardinals. Senior guard J.P. Phillips added four points, while senior guard Jayden Zych, senior forward Alex Mrdelja and senior guard Leo Omelich scored two points apiece in the winning effort.
Greenwich held a 15-9 lead on McMahon after the first quarter and was ahead, 37-25, at halftime. The Senators outscored the Cards, 21-9, in the third quarter to pull even at 46-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
Yet the Cardinals found their scoring touch in the final quarter and prevailed in their regular season finale.

“There’s nothing better than finishing Senior Night with a ‘W,” Scott noted. “It feels great, we’ve had a rough season and to finish strong on our home court, it feels great in front of the fans.”
Junior Adam Elauni scored six points and sophomore Oliver Frisoli had two points for the Cardinals. McMahon (11-9, 6-9) was led by Jahad Nash’s 20 points. Tavaris Tweedie contributed 14 points for the Senators.

“McMahon is a great program, they play great, physical man-to-man defense as usual,” Sirena said. “We were expecting a physical game. I’m glad that my team came out and played physical as well. We matched their physicality and that was the key determining factor to our win.”
