Despite playing well and holding the lead the majority of the game, Greenwich High School’s boys lacrosse team dropped a tough 12-11 decision to Bronxville (N.Y.) High School at Cardinal Stadium this past Saturday.
“Yet another tough one,” Greenwich coach Bobby Lutz said. “We had the lead most of the game, but with a dominating performance by their UNC-bound goalie, we couldn’t build a big enough lead to put them away.”
Dean Kim, an attack, scored a team-high four goals to pace the Cardinals. Conrad Burki, also an attackman, recorded three goals and one assist for Greenwich, which was coming off a hard-fought loss against New Canaan.
“It may have been one of the best days I’ve ever seen a goalie have,” Lutz said of Bronxville’s goalie. “The stat book says 21 saves, but it seemed like much more. And our shots were great.”
Colin Zeller, a midfielder, scored two goals, while Jimmy Flinn, a midfielder, had one goal and two assists for the Cardinals in their matchup against the visiting Broncos.
“The offense was clicking and getting the right looks, but he made saves at the end when it mattered most,” Lutz noted.
Adam Kim, a defender, had one goal, while attackman Mikey Brescia assisted on two goals and defensive midfielder Luke Marks had one assist for GHS.
“They went up by one with about 90 seconds left,” Lutz noted. “We had a chance to tie on the last shot but didn’t get the right look and it didn’t fall.”
Lane Critchell won an eye-opening 21 the 23 faceoffs he took for Greenwich, while teammate Dylan Botoff was 3 for 4 on faceoffs. Jack Hamel had six saves and Ilan Amaro stopped five shots for the Cardinals.
“Lane Critchell had a great day, but even with the extra possessions, we couldn’t beat a great goalie,” Lutz said.
Greenwich is in action today at Fairfield Ludlowe at 4:30 p.m.
