Greenwich High girls lacrosse team edges rival Ridgefield in FCIAC Quarterfinals; Cardinals to play New Canaan in conference tournament semifinals

The Greenwich and Ridgefield High School girls lacrosse teams share quite an extensive postseason history.

In 2022, Ridgefield defeated Greenwich in the quarterfinal-round of the FCIAC Tournament and in 2023, the Cardinals returned the favor, earning a dramatic comeback win over the Tigers in the conference tournament quarterfinals.

On Thursday, fifth-seeded Greenwich traveled to fourth-seeded Ridgefield, where the rivals met again in the playoffs – the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals. For the second season in a row, the Cardinals edged out the Tigers, posting a well-earned 13-11 victory.

The triumph put Greenwich into Monday’s 5 p.m. FCIAC Tournament semifinals, where it will face top-seeded New Canaan at Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk. Greenwich advanced to the FCIAC semifinals in 2023, losing to Darien.

Senior captain/attack Emma Abbazia recorded two goals and four assists to help propel Greenwich past Ridgefield in Thursday’s FCIAC quarterfinals.

Aubrey Roth for Greenwich, white jersey, No. 10, scored four goals against Ridgefield in the FCIAC quarterfinals.

“It was a crazy, intense game,” Greenwich coach Tara Clough said.

Junior attack Aubrey Roth scored four goals, while sophomore attack Giselle DiPietro tallied three goals and two assists for the Cardinals (11-6). Sophomore Dillon McFerran added two goals, while senior captain/attack Mary Kate Frey assisted on a goal for the victors.

Senior Katie Janis made five saves to support the winning effort. In Greenwich’s regular season matchup against New Canaan, the team they will play in the FCIAC semifinals, it played well in a 13-8 loss.
