Greenwich girls hockey team wins season-opener vs. Ridgefield

Two goals apiece from Caroline Lawrence and Lexi Danielson resulted in a successful season-opener for the Greenwich High School girls ice hockey team on Monday.

The Cardinals began their season with a tough 4-3 victory Ridgefield/Danbury/Immaculate in an FCIAC matchup at the Winter Garden Ice Arena. Greenwich took a 3-1 lead into the second period behind a pair of goals from Lawrence, a sophomore forward. Danielson, a junior forward, scored the game’s first goal with 11:58 remaining in the first period. Sophomore forward Kelsey Roth assisted on the goal.

Lawrence, a sophomore forward, increased Greenwich’s lead to 2-0 when she tallied at the 9:48 mark of the opening period. Sophomore forwards Sophie Roth and Peyton Jelinek were each credited with assists on the goal.  Ridgefield closed to within 2-1 on Emily Stefanelli’s unassisted goal with 4:27 left in the first period. Lawrence put the Cardinals back up by two goals when she converted a shot with 2:07 still remaining in the first period. Elizabeth Anderson and Jelinek each assisted on the tally.

Ridgefield scored the lone goal in the second period, with Kate Zangre tallying at the 7:45 mark, making it 3-2. Danielson added her second goal 53 seconds into the second period and Abby McGuire scored for Ridgefield late in the period. Greenwich held a 27-22 shots-on-goal advantage and received 19 saves from senior goalie Hannah Goldenberg. Isabella Crowley stopped 23 shots for Ridgefield.

Greenwich returns to action Thursday against Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink.
