A sparkling performance from goalie Emma Kunschner in her first varsity career start and a two-goal effort from Sophie Roth sparked the Greenwich High School girls ice hockey team to a 7-3 triumph against Stamford-Westhill-Staples at Terry Conners Ice Rink in Stamford on Wednesday night.
Kunschner, a sophomore, made 22 saves for the Cardinals (6-4-1).
“She stood in there strong and was able to make the second and third saves that she needed to make,” Greenwich coach Alex Lerchen said of Kunschner. “She showed a lot of composure for her first career start and I’m proud of her effort.”
Sophie Roth, a sophomore forward, registered two goals and one assist, while her sister, senior defender Delaney Roth, tallied twice for Greenwich, which led 3-1 after the first period and 7-2 following the second period.
“We were moving the puck well, hitting the point when we had to and getting the shots through,” Lerchen said. “I liked the fact that it was a complete team effort, a 45-minute effort in which everyone did their job and were pulling for each other.”
The Cardinals are seeded fourth in the upcoming FCIAC Tournament and will host No. 5 Wilton/Norwalk/McMahon in Monday’s 5:15 p.m. quarterfinal-round at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink.
In Wednesday’s game, Stamford-Westhill-Staples scored first with Paige Tuccinardi tallying off an assist from Alyssa Gioia with 11:30 remaining in the opening period. Sophie Roth tied the score with her first goal of the game 20 seconds later.
Junior forward Lily Bates gave Greenwich the lead for good at 2-1, scoring off an assist from Sophie Roth at the 3:52 mark of the opening period. Skating from one end of the ice to the other, Delaney Roth made it 3-1 with a goal late in the first period. After Gioia cut the Cards’ lead to 3-2 by scoring with 7:14 to go in the second period, Delaney put Greenwich back ahead by two goals with a tally at the 6:40 mark.
Sophomore Caroline Lawrence, junior Lexi Danielson and Sophie Roth each added second-period goals for the victors, while junior Tess Marciano, senior Riley Geary, Delaney Roth and freshman Lindsay Allen had an assist apiece for Greenwich.
Stamford-Westhill-Staples’ third-period goal came from Tuccinardi. The other FCIAC Tournament quarterfinal games on Monday include: No. 8 Ridgefield/Danbury against top-seeded Darien, No. 7 Fairfield co-op vs. No. 2 New Canaan and sixth-seeded Stamford-Westhill-Staples against third-seeded Trumbull/St. Joseph.
Greenwich wraps up its regular season Friday against Darien at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink at 5:15 p.m. The Cardinals are eager to put forth a better showing than they did the last time they faced the Blue Wave on March 3. Darien skated to a 7-1 win at Darien Ice House.
“We will be ready to go for this game,” Lerchen said.
