
The Greenwich High School girls tennis team opened its season in top form, posting a 7-0 victory over visiting Brien McMahon in an FCIAC matchup on Saturday morning.
Sophomore Ivanna Diez de Bonilla made an impressive Cardinals debut at first singles. Diez de Bonilla registered a 6-1, 6-1 victory against McMahon’s Amelia Heffern. At second singles, freshman Kyra Dybas gave Greenwich a 6-0, 6-1 victory. Dybas topped Cecilia Anderson.
Third singles saw Cardinals junior co-captain Courteney Sheets notch a 6-0, 6-1 triumph against Isabella Bartilucci. Malena Schraa also made a strong showing in her first varsity match. A freshman, Schraa was victorious against Avery McGurren, 6-3. 6-0.

In doubles action, senior co-captain Abby Shropshire and sophomore Julia Tamas formed a winning combination at the No. 1 spot for Greenwich. Shropshire and Tamis were 6-0, 6-1 winners against Mandie Romeus and Talena Thomas. Senior Kira Popa and freshman Emily Weinstein won their match at second doubles, 6-2, 6-0. At third doubles, sophomores Mei McGuiness/Valentina Rivano rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph.
Greenwich visits Fairfield Ludlowe on Monday and Staples on Tuesday, before hosting Norwalk on Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Greenwich dropped a 7-0 decision to Norwalk in its season-opener on Saturday.
The visiting Wreckers scored two runs in the second inning and added four runs in the third inning. The Cardinals were limited to two hits. Senior captains Olivia McClammy, a catcher and senior Chloe Smith (first base) had the Cardinals’ two hits.
Greenwich travels to Stamford on Monday and visits Fairfield Ludlowe on Wednesday. The Cardinals will play host to Darien on Friday.
