Cardinals boys volleyball team sweeps Westhill to improve their record to 4-1

The Greenwich boys volleyball team gathers after winning a point against Westhill in their FCIAC matchup on April 21, 2021.

Greenwich’s boys volleyball team continued its impressive trend of sweeping it opponents.

The Cardinals raised their record to 4-1 with a 3-0 win over visiting Westhill on Wednesday in an FCIAC match. All four of the Cardinals’ victories this season have come by a 3-0 score.

Coached by Emilio Renzulli, Greenwich won the match against an improving Westhill squad, 25-21, 30-28, 25-19. Seniors Anthony Bueti and Whit Courage helped pace the Cardinals’ offense with timely kills throughout the match.

“The first set, all-around we played great,” Bueti said.” We had eight serving errors, it wasn’t that bad, but we can still do better. The second set, we won, but we could have done a better job at the end. But we ended up pulling it out, which gave us some momentum for the third set.”

Renzulli credited Bueti and Courage for helping ignite the squad offensively and setter Tomas Falcon for setting up significant points.

Greenwich’s boys volleyball team has a record of 4-1 so far this season.

“Tomas played very well, this was probably the best game he set all season,” Renzulli said. “Anthony (Bueti) probably had double-digit kills and Whit (Courage) also led us.”

Senior libero Lopsang Syangbo also paced the Cardinals in their latest win.

“He has taken that libero role and run with it,” Renzulli said of Syangbo.

Up next for Greenwich is a matchup on the road against Fairfield Warde on Friday – the team Renzulli excelled on as a high school athlete.

“We’re definitely getting better,” Bueti said. “There’s still a lot to learn for all the new kids. We have Warde on Friday, which is our next challenge, so we are just going to go out there and play our best.”
