Sweeping the doubles matches and winning three of the four singles matchups, the Sacred Heart Greenwich tennis team earned its first win of its 2021 season, defeating visiting Greenwich Country Day School in an FAA match held on Wednesday.
“All three doubles teams got off to quick starts and defeated their opponents in straight sets to give the team an early 3-0 team lead,” Sacred Heart coach Ed Metzendorf said.
In doubles competition, Isobel Lehrman and Morgan Wilkens of Sacred Heart posted a 6-2, 6-0 win against Charlotte Oberweger/Ella Brahurst, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot. At second doubles, Sacred Heart’s Francesca Maragani and Catherine Dodman were victorious against Rory Ashmeade/Julia Schenck, 6-2, 6-4. Third doubles saw the Tigers’ Kaitlyn Langer and Isobel Cunningham defeat Anna Loviski and Kaylee Dunleavy, 6-2, 6-2.
In singles play, Greenwich Country Day received a hard-fought victory from Alex Schwartz at first singles. Schwartz edged Sacred Heart senior co-captain Grace Coale in a match that concluded as the sun was setting. Schwartz won the first set, then Coale took the second set, forcing a super tiebreaker. In the super tiebreaker, Schwartz registered a 10-6 win. Ursula Vollmer, also a Sacred Heart senior co-captain pulled out a victory at second singles against Ellie Stark. After dropping the opening set, Vollmer won the second set, before emerging victorious in the super tiebreaker, 10-6.
Sacred Heart’s Isobel Costello rallied to win her match against Greenwich Country Day’s Kim Konigsberg at third singles, after Konisberg took the first set. At fourth singles, Mary Hawthorn of the Tigers was a straight-set winner.
Up next for Sacred Heart is a road match against FAA foe King School on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Greenwich Country Day School (0-3) visits Rye Country Day School Saturday at 12 p.m. in an FAA match.
