Greenwich’s boys and girls tennis teams each registered 7-0 victories against Danbury and extended their winning streak to three matches in the process.
The Cardinals girls tennis team played the Hatters in a home match on Monday. Ivanna Diez de Bonilla was in top form at No. 1 singles for the Cardinals. Diez de Bonilla defeated Taylor Potpan, 6-0, 6-0. At second singles, Kyra Dybas of Greenwich, a sophomore, was strong throughout in beating Emily Bleeker, 6-1, 6-0.
In the No. 3 singles match, Greenwich freshman Malena Schraa kept her successful season going, notching a 6-0, 6-0 win against Jane Gawley. Fourth singles saw Cardinals senior co-captain Courteney Sheets sweep Zoey Kallianiotis, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, senior co-captain Abby Shropshire and sophomore Julia Tamis were 6-0, 6-0 winners at the No. 1 spot, where they have posted decisive victories of late. Senior Kira Popa and freshman Emily Weinstein were victorious again for the Cardinals at the No. 2 spot, topping Danbury’s Nia Sterling/Riya Patel, 6-1, 6-0. At third doubles, sophomores Mei McGuinness/Valentina Rivano posted a 6-0, 6-2 win for the Cards against Erin Bleeker/Stella Walker.
With the win, Greenwich upped its record to 6-4, heading into today’s road matchup against Westhill.
On the boys scene, the Cardinals visited Danbury on Monday and won each match in straight sets. Matthew Luzzi, a senior captain, was victorious at the top singles spot, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2, sophomore Zachary Toback swept to a 6-0, 6-0 victory for the Cardinals, who also received 6-0, 6-0 wins from senior Sebastian Yamasoto at third singles and senior Connor Sobieri at No. 4.
Greenwich was just as strong in doubles play against the Hatters. Seniors Colin Speaker and Christian Fikre were 6-1, 6-0 winners at No. 1, while freshmen Bruce Lunder and Harrison Wolfe won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. At third doubles, juniors Isaiah Sohn/Francisco Fontana posted a 6-0, 6-1 win.
The Cardinals (6-4) host Westhill today at 4 p.m.
