The Greenwich High School girls tennis team was eliminated from the FCIAC Tournament in the quarterfinal-round with a 6-1 loss to host New Canaan.
At first singles, New Canaan sophomore Lexi McCall posted a 6-2, 6-1 win against Greenwich sophomore Juanna Diez de Bonilla. Valentina Zamora, a senior, was victorious for New Canaan at second singles, 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 3 singles match, Rams sophomore Serena Platt registered a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Cardinals freshman, 6-3, 6-1.
Freshman Layla Zuwiyya from New Canaan won in three sets against Greenwich’s Courteney Sheets, a junior, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. In doubles action, Jordyn Lee/Annabel Brown notched a 6-3, 6-2 win against GHS senior Abby Shropshire and sophomore Julia Tamis, 6-3, 6-2.
At second doubles, Charlotte Sigg/Natalie Thompson came back to defeat Greenwich senior Emily Weinstein and senior Kira Popa, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Greenwich’s victory came at third doubles. Sophomores Mei McGuiness/Valentina Rivano recorded a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 comeback win over New Canaan’s Sophia Doshi/Julia Gjertsen.
Up next for the Cardinals is the CIAC Class LL Tournament, which begins next week.
