Behind a second-place finish from Charles Schrohe, Greenwich’s boys golf team placed seventh in the team standings at the CIAC Boys Division I State Championships Monday at Tallwood Country Club in Hebron.
Schrohe, a sophomore, shot an even-par 72 for the Cardinals, who registered a four-player aggregate team score of 318. Fairfield Prep won the Division I state title with a team score of 8-over-par 296. Conard was second at 12-over-par 300, followed by Glastonbury (301), Darien (304), Hall (307) and New Canaan (309). Greenwich, Staples (321), Ridgefield (323), Fairfield Ludlowe (326) and Shelton (326) rounded out the top-10 teams at tournament, which included 20 squads.
“Today we hung in there and put up a decent number,” Greenwich coach Jeff Santilli said. “We have a game plan going forward for what we need to work on during the summer so we can be ready for the fall season.”
In Monday’s Division I Championships, Schrohe shot a 1-over-par 36 on the front nine, which featured a birdie on the par-3 sixth hole. On the back nine, Schrohe, sank a birdie putt on the par-5 11th hole, then birdied the par-4 13th hole.
“He’s battle tested and plays a lot of tournament golf and it shows,” Santilli said of Schrohe. “He had a very good round today and he showed a lot of composure.”
Schrohe finished in a four-way second-place tie with William Huntington of Fairfield Prep, Garrett Brown from Conard and Connor Goode of Glastonbury. Brett Chodos, an Amity junior, was the tournament’s medalist, winning the individual title by shooting a 2-under-par 70. Schrohe’s impressive round included 12 pars and just three bogeys.
Champion Fairfield Prep was also led by Charles Duffy’s round of 3-over-par 73. For Greenwich, Luke Scanlan, a junior, carded a 5-over-par 75. He finished in a tie for 12th place with seven other players in the tournament, which included 101 competitors. Scanlan had a birdie on No. 2 and No. 12, both par-4s. He sank par putts on 11 holes,
“Luke showed a lot today as well,” Santilli said. “For an inexperienced group, there were a lot of positives for us during the season.”
Besides their solid showing at Monday’s Division I Tournament, a huge positive for the Cardinals was a second-place finish in the team standings at last week’s FCIAC Tournament at Fairchild Wheeler Golf Course in Fairfield. The Cards finished with a team score of 307.
“Our team stuck to the game plan at the FCIAC championships and performed so well,” Santilli said. “It was great to see our guys rise to the occasion like that.”
Also for Greenwich in Monday’s state Division I tourney, freshman Owen Duda shot an 81. Duda birdied the par-5 first hole and the par-4 second hole at Tallwood. He also holed a birdie putt on No. 11 (par-5). Senior Matias Lew posted a 90 on Monday, parring five holes and junior JT Spadone shot a 91 for the Cards. Greenwich won the Division I state championship in 2019, 2018, 2012 and 2004 under Santilli’s tutelage.
Placing among the top-10 finishers at the state championships, earned Schrohe CIAC All-State Team accolades. He also earned All-FCIAC First Team honors. Scanlan and junior JT Spadone received All-FCIAC West honors.
“Since we’re a new program with some inexperienced, going forward, we want to get more experience playing tournament golf,” Santilli said. “We’re excited about the future.”
