One goal apiece from Zita Cohen and Justine Ligouri and an 11-save effort by Kelly Janssen lifted the Greenwich High School girls field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Mamaroneck in its season-opener at Cardinal Stadium on Saturday.
“It was a hard-fought win against a very talented Mamaroneck team,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said. “The game was evenly played on both sides of the field and Kelly did an awesome job in goal for her first varsity game.”
The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the second quarter, scoring off a penalty corner. Senior Zita Cohen scored off a pass from Justine Ligouri, giving Greenwich a one-goal lead. Mamaroneck tallied later on in the second quarter, tying the score at 1-1.
The intense game remained tied until the fourth quarter. On a breakaway, Greenwich senior Isa Biagini moved the ball to Ligouri, who finished in front for a goal, giving the Cardinals a 2-1 advantage. Janssen made 11 saves in goal for Greenwich, which will look to go 2-0 when it hosts Ridgefield Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
“As a team, we learned a lot about where we need to improve, but I couldn’t be more proud of the heart and hustle they put into this game,” Wax said. “It was the exact tone we wanted to set for this season.”
