Greenwich scored the first goal in its game against FCIAC field hockey rival Darien on Monday, but the Blue Wave had a strong response, registering the rest of the game’s tallies.
Darien continued its undefeated season, posting a 5-1 win over visiting Greenwich, scoring five unanswered goals, after the Cardinals took a 1-0 lead.
Junior Klara Mueffelmann gave Greenwich a 1-0 edge. Mueffelman scored off an assist from senior Isa Biagini 40 seconds into the first quarter.
“The rest of the quarter was strong and played equally on both sides of the field,” Greenwich coach Megan Wax said.
Darien scored with approximately one minute left in the second quarter, tying the score at 1-1. The Blue Wave controlled the second quarter, as they scored three straight goals to open a 4-1 advantage. Three minutes into the third period, Darien scored off a penalty corner to seize a 5-1 lead.
“For the remainder of the game, both teams battled it out and fought with intense heart,” Wax said. “Unfortunately, we were not able to connect on our scoring opportunities and the score remained the same for the rest of the third quarter and fourth,” Wax said.
Sophomore Kelly Janssen made 10 saves in goal for the Cardinals, who have a 9-4 record. Greenwich hosts Norwalk on Thursday at 4:15 p.m.
