Greenwich High field hockey team defeated by Ridgefield in quarterfinals of FCIAC Tournament

Greenwich High School’s field hockey team was eliminated from the FCIAC Tournament with a 3-1 loss to Ridgefield in the quarterfinal-round on Saturday morning.

“It was a tight battle in the rain all day,” Cardinals coach Megan Wax said. “The game stayed scoreless until there were 55 seconds left in the third quarter when Ridgefield scored.”

At the 12:47 mark of the fourth quarter, the fourth-seeded Tigers tallied off a penalty corner, making it 2-0. A minute-and-half later, fifth-seeded Greenwich cut Ridgefield’s lead to 2-1, scoring off a penalty corner.

Senior Isa Lattuada scored off an assist from junior Klara Mueffelmann.

“Isa Lattuada had an amazing goal that resulted from Klara’s shot to goal,” Wax said. “The ball hit off the goalie’s pads and it was above everyone’s head on the way out when Isa was able to reach up and redirect it,” Wax said of the Cardinals’ goal.

Ridgefield regained a two-goal lead at 3-1 when it scored at the 7:14 mark of the fourth quarter. Greenwich had two offensive corners, while Ridgefield drew seven corners. Sophomore Kelly Janssen made six saves in goal for the Cardinals.

Up next for Greenwich is the CIAC Class LL state tournament, which begins on Nov. 9. Greenwich is ranked eighth in the state in Class LL. Ridgefield, which is ranked seventh in Class LL, plays top-seeded New Canaan in the FCIAC Tournament semifinals Tuesday at Brien McMahon at 6 p.m.
