Behind Annie Bingle’s second-place finish, Greenwich dives excel at Class LL finals

Greenwich High School’s divers certainly thrived at the CIAC Class LL Diving Championships Wednesday evening at Middletown High School.

Led by senior Annie Bingle’s second-place finish, Greenwich’s divers made their mark at the ultra-competitive event, posting four top-10 performances.

Bingle, a three-time All-America diver, who will compete at the University of Pennsylvania next year, earned a second-place finish with 461.80 points over 11 rounds of diving on the 1-meter board.

Bingle, who produced one of her best career performances, also earned the second-place medal at the FCIAC Championships last week at Westhill High School (436.70 points).

Hannah Chuckas, a junior of Westhill/Stamford, captured the gold medal at the Class LL Championships. Chuckas won the championship with a score of 469.25 points over 11 dives.

Junior Javiera Garcia of Greenwich earned a podium finish. Garcia placed fourth in Class LL (414.80 points). Esme Merrill, one of the Cardinals’ senior captains, had a seventh-place finish (357.85).

Also pacing the Cardinals at the state competition was sophomore Mackenzie Newi (337.90).

Jade-Su Casey of Glastonbury finished third in Class LL (461.20), while Julia Stefanowicz was fifth (380.90). Kate Whitaker placed sixth for Staples (357.70) and teammate Mia Guster finished eighth (347.40).

Greenwich’s divers will next compete in the State Open Championships, which is scheduled to take place on Nov. 18, also at Middletown High School.
