The Greenwich Academy field hockey team returned from a long trip to Pomfret School victorious on Wednesday.
Sixth-seeded Greenwich Academy posted a hard-fought 1-0 overtime win over third-seeded Tabor Academy in the quarterfinal-round of the NEPSAC Class A Championships held at Pomfret School on Wednesday.
Up next for Greenwich Academy is the NEPSAC Class A semifinals, where they will play second-seeded Phillips Andover Academy on Saturday at 2 p.m., at a location yet to be announced.
“It was zero, zero the whole game,” Greenwich Academy coach Jamie Brower said. “They played tough defense and it took us a bit to get moving. The second half, we played well, we had a lot of corner opportunities.”
Sienna Tejpaul scored the game-winning goal for the Gators off a penalty corner. With 2:40 remaining in the first overtime, Tejpaul scored off a pass from Laetitia Cartellieri giving GA the victory.
For the game, Greenwich Academy took 13 penalty corners. Goalie Ellie Volpe stood tall in the cage, making seven crucial saves in the winning effort. JP Pittignano and Gigi Caldero were among the GA athletes that sparked the triumph.
“It was a great, gritty win for us,” Brower said. “We are excited to go to practice tomorrow (Thursday).”
