

Five members of Greenwich High School’s state and FCIAC championship girls volleyball team received All-FCIAC honors.
The Cardinals finished with a sparkling 26-1 record on their way to winning the FCIAC and CIAC Class LL titles, with each athlete on the dynamic team contributing to the program’s outstanding success.
The five athletes that received All-FCIAC Team recognition included Liana Sarkissian, Adele Sotgiu, Maggie Saleeby, Lucia Spanjol and Sophie Jones. Sarkissian and Sotgiu earned All-FCIAC First Team honors. Saleeby and Spanjol were All-FCIAC Third Team selections and Jones was presented with All-FCIAC Honorable mention accolades.
Sarkissian, a senior, will continue her volleyball career at Dayton University. A middle blocker/hitter, Sarkissian powered the Cardinals throughout memorable championship season. A captain, she registered seven kills in the top-seeded Cardinals’ 3-0 win over Fairfield Ludlowe in the Class LL Tournament final and amassed 13 kills and 19 service points in Greenwich’s 3-1 triumph against Darien in the Class LL semifinals. Those were just two of the many impressive performances Sarkissian produced for Greenwich this fall.
Sotgiu was named the MVP of the Class LL Tournament’s championship match against Ludlowe, recording seven kills. In the Class LL semifinal-round matchup against Darien, Sotgiu, a captain, tallied 17 kills and 15 service points.
Greenwich’s victory in the Class LL Tournament final concluded Sotgiu’s outstanding career. She was a starter for the Cardinals since her freshman season, igniting the team from her middle hitter position.


Saleeby, a junior outside hitter, was one of Greenwich’s key producers throughout the season. In the Class LL championship match against Ludlowe, Saleeby posted eight kills and in the Cards’ semifinal win over Darien, she notched five kills. Saleeby was also one of the Cardinals’ most effective and efficient servers during their championship campaign.
Spanjol, a junior setter, consistently set up Greenwich’s hitters with her precise passes and sets. She rang up 30 assists in the Class LL championship match and sparked Greenwich with 40 assists in its win semifinal-round win against Darien.


Jones, one of the team’s senior captains, had seven kills and three aces in the Cardinals’ Class LL title-winning match and provided strong serving for the squad throughout the fall. Her block sealed Greenwich’s state semifinal win against Darien. For the season, Sarkissian, Sotgiu and Jones displayed significant leadership as captains for Greenwich, which was coached by Steve Lapham. Lapham, has guided Greenwich to three Class LL state championships (2010, 2017, 2021) and two FCIAC titles (2013, 2017).
