Greenwich Academy, Sacred Heart swim teams open their respective seasons with strong performances

The Greenwich Academy and Sacred Heart Greenwich swim teams began their seasons by competing against each other in a meet held at Brunswick School this past Saturday – a competition that also involved Canterbury School, which swam at their location.

The virtual tri-meet saw Greenwich Academy register victories against Sacred Heart and Canterbury, while Sacred Heart went 1-1 on the day, defeating Canterbury. Greenwich Academy posted a 13.5-70.5 victory against Sacred Heart and topped Canterbury, 135-31. Sacred Heart was victorious against Canterbury, 131-45.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Greenwich Academy’s Alex Moore, Brielle Gold, Bryce Gold and Avery Sammons combined for a winning time of 1:49.00. GA placed second in the race (1:54.07), followed by Sacred Heart (2:00.69).

In the meet’s first individual event, the 200-yard freestyle, Emma Robredo of Sacred Heart placed first, touching the wall in 2:03.57. Teammate Julia Pujadas was second (2:09.91), while GA’s Eliza Babyak was third (2:12.25).

Brielle Gold gave GA a winning performance in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 2:16.80. Victoria Mordaunt of the Tigers was the runner-up (2:25.58) and teammate Irene Robredo took third (2:32.42).

The 50 freestyle saw Maddie Golden place first for the Gators with a time of 25.24 seconds. Penny Lazar placed second for Greenwich Academy in 25.67 and teammate Alex Moore was right behind her, clocking in at 25.72. In the 1-meter diving competition, Greenwich Academy’s Grace Wu took top honors, earning a score of 281.70. Grayson Ford, also of GA was second (227.93) and teammate Ellie Perkins finished third with 214.80 points.

Brielle Gold was the 100-butterfly winner, posting a time of 59.50. GA teammate Rory Keller had a second-place finish (1:01.86) and Lauren McCauley of SHG finished third (1:02.17). The Tigers’ Jane Cary won the 100-yard freestyle, registering a time of 55.53. Holden took second in 57.21 and Salma Thomas of GA was third (57.75).

Irene Robredo was the 500-yard freestyle winner for Sacred Heart (5:26.68) and McCauley finished second in the event, posting a time of 5:33.85. Karin Lund of the Gators was third (5:36.01).

In the 200 freestyle relay, Bryce Gold, Holden, Hutton Saunders and Avery Sammons combined to post a winning time of 1:40.69. GA also placed second in the race (1:48.31). Sacred Heart’s Julia Pujadas won the 100 backstroke in 1:06.93 and Kristin Isherood of GA placed second (1:10.67).

Bryce Gold earned top honors in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.25), while teammates Charlotte Milligan (1:12.96) and Salma Thomas (1:15.27) placed second and third, respectively.

The meet concluded with Bryce Gold, Saunders, Sammons and Brielle Gold giving GA a winning effort in the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.10). Greenwich Academy faces Hamden Hall at Brunswick School Wednesday at 4 p.m. Sacred Heart hosts Masters School Wednesday at 5 p.m.
