Greenwich boys hockey team topped Trumbull on Lewis’ late goal; Cardinals girls hockey team defeated Fairfield Co-Op

Greenwich High School’s boys and girls ice hockey teams each registered key road wins against their FCIAC opponents on Saturday.

In boys ice hockey action, the Cardinals edged Trumbull, 3-2, Saturday at Shelton Sports Center. Freshman forward Joe Lewis recorded two goals and senior forward Danny Pratley had one goal to pace Greenwich to the victory.

The Cardinals are 4-0-1 in their last five games and improved their record to 5-5-1 with Saturday’s triumph against the Eagles.

“Joe Lewis, a freshman, got a little more of an opportunity and took advantage of it,” GHS coach Jack Duffy said. “He had a great game.”

Pratley gave the Cards a 1-0 lead on Trumbull with a goal midway through the first period. Receiving the puck at the top of the circle, Pratley tallied off a slap shot, giving Greenwich a 1-0 edge. Assisting on Pratley’s goal were seniors Daniel Greenbaum and Jordan Bowbeer.

Louis scored a power play goal in the second period, giving Greenwich a 2-1 lead, before Trumbull responded, tying the score at 2-2. Getting the puck deep in Trumbull’s zone, Louis banged in a shot with 2:47 remaining in the third period for the game-winning goal.

Sophomore Nick Sinisi got the start in goal and performed well for Greenwich in the winning effort.

“Sinisi in goal had 25 saves and he had a few big saves in the third period,” Duffy said. “We’re back to .500, which is nice. We really start the meat of our schedule now. We have a tough schedule coming up and we’ll what we’re made of now.”

Indeed, Greenwich hosts Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe on Tuesday at Dorothy Hamill Skating Rink, then travels to Darien Ice House on Saturday for a matchup against New Canaan.

In girls hockey action, Greenwich defeated Fairfield Co-op for the second time this week. The Cardinals registered a 7-1 triumph against Fairfield in a game held at Wonderland of Ice on Saturday.

With the win, Greenwich upped its record to 5-4, heading into today’s road game against Trumbull-St. Joseph at 2 p.m. Greenwich, which defeated Fairfield Co-op, 9-3, on Monday, was powered by two goals from junior forward Sophie Roth.

Junior Caroline Lawrence, freshman Aubrey Roth, senior Lily Bates, senior Lexi Danielson and senior Tess Marciano scored one goal apiece for the Cardinals. Junior Kelsey Roth assisted on two goals, while freshman Alexis Carino had an assist in the winning effort.

Greenwich hosts Morristown-Beard (N.J.) Monday at 4:15 p.m.
