A three-goal first period lifts Greenwich girls hockey team past rival Darien

Senior Lily Bates scored two goals, junior Sophie Roth had one goal and one assist and senior Lexi Danielson tallied once to lead the Greenwich High School girls ice hockey team to a 4-1 win over Darien in an FCIAC game held on Wednesday at Darien Ice House.

The victory was the third straight for the Cardinals, whose record improved to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the FCIAC. Bates, one of the Cardinals’ captains, gave Greenwich a 1-0 first-period lead, scoring off an assist from Roth.

“Lily scored on the first shift, which was a huge confidence-booster,” Greenwich coach Brooke Heron said.

Danielson, also a captain, scored a power play goal, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage. Freshman Nina Coffee assisted on Danielson’s second period goal.

Still in the first period, Bates tallied again, making it 3-0. Darien scored in the second period, cutting Greenwich’s lead to 3-1. In the third period, the Cards regained their three-goal lead, thanks to Roth’s goal off a pass from Coffee.

Junior Emma Kunschner was strong in goal for the Cardinals, earning the win.

“We were very disciplined in our defensive end,” Heron said. “So much so that Darien didn’t have many shots on us. The energy on the bench was incredible. I’m so proud of the team.”
