Greenwich wrestlers Louis Ceci, Stephen Numme qualify for State Open with fourth-place finishes at Class LL meet

After excelling at the FCIAC Wrestling Championships, Greenwich High School’s Louis Ceci and Stephen Numme certainly made their mark on the mat at last weekend’s CIAC Class LL Championships.

Ceci, who captured the 182-pound weight class title at the FCIAC Championships, which was held at New Canaan High School, placed fourth in this past Saturdays’ Class LL competition. Numme, who posted a fourth-place finish at the FCIAC meet, was also fourth at the Class LL Championships, which took place at Trumbull High School.

By finishing fourth in their respective weight class brackets at the LL meet, Ceci and Numme each earned spots in the CIAC State Open Championships, which takes place Friday and Saturday at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The State Open commences Friday at 3 p.m. and the matches begin on Saturday at 9 a.m.

At the Class LL Championships, Ceci was seeded first in the 182-pound bracket. He pinned his opponent from Westhill in the first round in 32 seconds, then defeated William Imschweiler of Fairfield Warde in 52 seconds in the quarterfinal-round.

In the semifinals, Ceci was edged by Danbury’s Dominic Iaquinto by a tough, 5-4 decision. Iaquinto would proceed to win the 182-pound Class LL title. Ceci wrestled Ryan Gilchrist of Norwalk in the match for third place and lost by a close margin, as Gilchrist won the match, 7-5. Ceci pinned Gilchrist with three seconds left in the third period to win the 182-pound championship at the FCIAC finals.

Numme, who was the No. 8 seed in the 113-pound bracket at the Class LL meet, registered a 6-0 victory against Calli Gilchrist of Norwalk/McMahon in the quarterfinals, then was pinned by Dominic Spadaro of Fairfield Warde in the semifinals in 1:31.

Numme went on to win two more matches in the consolation bracket, one by pinfall in 2:50 and the other by an 8-5 decision. In the match for third place, Numme lost by pinfall to Alvin Moody of Manchester in 3:24.
