Sacred Heart Greenwich made a long trip to Penn Charter School on Friday without a loss on its record and was still unbeaten when it returned home.
On the strength of a goal in triple overtime by Franny O’Brien, Sacred Heart came back to register a 9-8 come-from-behind victory against Penn Charter School in a lacrosse game held in the rain in Pennsylvania Friday night.
O’Brien, a senior midfielder/co-captain, recorded a game-high four goals and added one assist to propel the Tigers to the hard-fought win. Maggie Bacigalupo scored two goals, Charley Bacigalupo had one goal and one assist and Karina Sethi tallied one goal and one assist for Sacred Heart, which has a record of 6-0-1 on the season.
SHG spent most of the matchup coming back from deficits. They trailed 3-0, 3-1, 6-2 and 7-4. The Tigers tied the score at 7-7, then Penn Charter tallied, making it 8-7, before Sacred Heart knotted the score at 8-8 with five minutes remaining in the second half to force overtime.
“SHG won the draw controls in each of the three overtime periods,” Sacred Heart coach Sharon Robinson said. “In the third OT, Franny O’Brien drove to goal and shot just high. SHG retained possession, set up an offensive set, and Franny got fouled and had an 8-meter opportunity.”
O’Brien converted her free position shot, capping her four-goal game and giving the Tigers their latest win against a formidable foe. Kelly Haggerty posted one goal, Abby Barnett assisted on a goal and Laura O’Connor was strong in goal for Sacred Heart, registering nine saves.
Penn Charter was paced by Darcy Felter and Maddie Shoup, both of whom scored three goals.
Up next for the Tigers is a home game against Loomis Chaffee School Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
