Greenwich girls tennis team eliminated by Staples in CIAC Class LL Tournament

Greenwich High School’s girls tennis team’s season came to an end in the opening round of the CIAC Class LL Tournament and a familiar foe halted their 2022 campaign.

Third-seeded Staples eliminated the 14th-seeded Cardinals from the Class LL Tournament, posting a 5-2 home victory in Tuesday’s first round. With the loss, Greenwich ended its season with a record of 11-7, with three of its seven losses coming against Staples. The Wreckers defeated the Cardinals during the regular season, in the FCIAC Tournament quarterfinals and in Tuesday’s Class LL tourney.

Greenwich had one win in singles competition and one victory in doubles play Tuesday against Staples. Sophomore Emily Weinstein and freshman Yume Inagawa were victorious at second doubles for the Cardinals against the Wreckers. Weinstein/Inagawa registered a 6-4, 7-5 win at the No. 2 doubles spot against Lauren Hess/Giselle Oldani.

At third doubles, senior co-captain Kylie Finkelstein and freshman Emme Pecorin were defeated 6-3, 6-3, by Staples’ Sofia Palumbo/Caroline Caggiano. Cardinals senior co-captain Courteney Sheets and junior Julia Tamis (No. 1) lost to Staples’ Audrey Kercher and Jordana Latzman, 6-2, 6-3.

The Wreckers won three of the four singles matches. Amelia Galin was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over GHS junior Ivanna Diez de Bonilla at first singles, while Karenna Birns defeated Cardinals sophomore Kyra Dybas at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0. At third singles, Staples’ Ally Francis pulled out a 7-6, 6-3 win over Greenwich sophomore Malena Schraa.

Greenwich’s singles win came courtesy of Lilly Foley. A sophomore, Foley concluded a strong season in singles play by topping Jenna Kornbluth, 6-4, 6-1. Staples went on to advance to the Class LL semifinals, where they were lost to Darien today, 4-2

Coached by Julie Shropshire, the Cardinals began competition in the Class LL Tournament by beating Cheshire, 6-1, in the qualifying round.
