Greenwich High junior Dylan Atkinson edged in semifinal-round of CIAC Invitational Tennis Tournament

Greenwich’s Dylan Atkinson led the Cardinals at the CIAC Invitational Tournament.

Dylan Atkinson, a Greenwich High School junior, made an outstanding showing at the CIAC Invitational Boys Tennis Tournament, advancing to the semifinal-round in the singles bracket.

Atkinson’s journey toward the singles championship came to an end with a 6-1, 7-6 (2), loss to top-seeded Tighe Brunetti of Staples in today’s CIAC Invitational Tournament semifinals, held at the Tennis and Fitness Center of Rocky Hill.

“It was an extremely well-played match, especially the second set,” Greenwich coach Ray Marschall said. “Overall, Greenwich had a great tournament, and hats off to the tournament director for managing all of the variables (most noteworthy, the weather).”

Brunetti will play second-seeded Petro Kuzmenok in the tournament’s championship match tomorrow at Wesleyan University. The title match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

Seeded fourth, Atkinson, who played at No. 1 singles for Greenwich throughout the season, registered a record of 3-1 in the tournament. Following an opening-round bye, Atkinson posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Luke Levanet from Fairfield Prep in the Round of 32 match.

In the Round of 16, he was a 6-4, 6-2 win over Paul James of Trumbull, putting him in the quarterfinal-round. Atkinson then defeated No. 5-seeded Utsav Ubramani of Cheshire in the quarterfinals, 7-5, 6-4, to make it to today’s semifinals against Brunetti, a senior, who was chosen as the FCIAC’s MVP.
