Greenwich Academy cross country team places second in first FAA meet of the season; GA’s Maddie Lee finishes first in race; Greenwich Country Day, Sacred Heart, third and fourth in team standings

Behind a first-place finish from junior Maddie Lee and four top-20 finishes, Greenwich Academy’s cross country team placed a strong second in the team standings at the first FAA meet held on Wednesday at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.

Lee, who is coming off a sensational sophomore season, won the FAA race at Sherwood Island State Park with a time of 20:35. Saki Tomita of Hopkins School finished second, followed by Cleo Saltz of Rye Country Day School.

Hopkins placed first in the team standings with a score of 31 points, while Greenwich Academy placed second (76 points). Greenwich Country Day School finished third (106) and Sacred Heart Greenwich was fourth (119). The first FAA meet of the fall season included nine league teams.

Junior Grace Sullivan had GA’s next best finish after Lee, placing 14th in 22:48 and freshman Nadia Kowalski finished 18th (23:30) was 18th. Emily Goodman, a senior captain posted a 20th-place finish for the Gators (23:24), while teammate and Isabel Pombo, a freshman took 23rd (24:00) for the Gators. Grace Crookenden, a senior captain, finished 25th in 24:14 for GA.

“Captains Emily Goodman and Grace Crookenden have been doing an excellent job leading and motivating the team and encouraging the newest members to give their best during practices and meets,” Greenwich Academy coach Jane Finch said.

Chloe Castro-Burnette, a senior, finished 32nd with a time of 24:58, while sophomore Casey Duval was 35th (25:07) for GA. Freshman Priya Marsh finished 39th in 25:20, while sophomore Penny Lazar (26:46), freshman Victoria Batres (27:26), senior Scarlet Fishkind (29:40) and senior McKenna Brewer (31:27) also competed for Greenwich Academy.

Greenwich Country Day School received a fifth-place finish from freshman Macy Putka (21:26) and a seventh-place showing from senior Wylie Dell’Olio (22:06).

Erin Dixon, a senior, placed 24th (24:09), while Natalie Simpson, a sophomore was 37th (25:18) for GCDS. Also for Greenwich Country Day, Caroline Deus placed 40th (25:21) and freshman Sarah Goldstein posted a time of 25:43.

For Sacred Heart, junior Ava Lillis was eighth in the race, posting a time of 22:07. Sophomore Maggie Finn finished 12th (22:30), senior Anne Finn was 31st (24:48) and senior Katherine May placed 33rd (25:05).

Sophomore Emily Shull finished 42nd (25:39) and senior Jacquelyn Monahan posted a time of 26:08 for SHG.

For the meet, Greenwich Academy went 7-1, posting team victories against Greenwich Country Day, Sacred Heart, Rye Country Day, Greens Farms Academy, Holy Child, St. Luke’s and Masters School.

Greenwich Country Day went 6-2, defeating Sacred Heart, Rye Country Day, Greens Farms Academy, Holy Child, St. Luke’s and Masters. Sacred Heart was 5-3, topping, Rye Country Day, GFA, Holy Child, St. Luke’s and Masters.

“It is a wonderful group to coach and we are looking forward to an exciting and challenging season,” Finch said of her GA squad. “The FAA league is looking stronger every year – it’s great to see so many runners out there representing FAA schools.”
